DVD Reviews of thirtysomething: The Complete First Season

DVD Review: 5 star show and dvd set/1 star for nasty politcal booklet
Summary: 3 Stars

I just received my dvd set today and have been waiting impatiently for this wonderful show to be released, I had three episodes on vhs and saved them for memories sake but couldn't exactly watch them over and over - I mean there were only three! So I immediately pre-ordered this and called my mother and sister who I knew would be as excited as I was. The disc set is high quality, the packaging is very nice and I was so thrilled when I pulled out a big full color booklet with photos and all kinds of information written about the series....until I went outside, curled up in a lawn chair and started to read.

My joy did not last, and turned to anger rather quickly. I don't like to mix politics with my relaxation time, my entertainment, not even if it's everything I agree with, it doesn't belong so I have a bone to pick with those who wrote about the show and the people the characters represented. In general, they insulted the show every 2 or 3 sentences but they could not stop there, they actually insulted every single person that loved the show because they could relate. If you could relate to this when it was on, because these were people like you or people you knew, or people you wish you could be, you were clearly deemed to be a self-absorbed "narcissistic", "hedonistic" "yuppie" who is "committed to profit, and the urge toward consumption" ... "which was epitomized by President Ronald Reagan... A fundamental principal of Reagan's Presidency...was the encouragement of a culture of unbridled greed and materialism where the primary goal had become self interest (a set of values that ultimately led toward the economic collapse the nation now faces)" Are you freakin' serious? I don't care if that's what you believe or if that's what is true or not true, keep your personal political nastiness out of my dvd booklet - this is entertainment, for the sake of entertainment! I watch my good old dvd collection for the purpose of escaping from the current reality for a little while. I wasn't even old enough to vote for goodness sake, and I bought this for the purpose of remembering the good old days of youth when you have no idea how hard life will be by the time you are 30 something!

I switched to the next article, being annoyed that a release of my favorite show was being used to make a political slam at President Reagan as well as everyone (me, my mother, my sister) who loved this show because they understood where the characters came from) it just continued to slam the show, slam the people the characters represented, slammed everything except the brilliant people who wrote it and acted in it, of course because those people are people they know and admire while we are all just pieces of self-absorbed, narcissitic garbage. Which is funny coming from people in the media industry who only care about how fabulous they are, how brilliant and artistic they are, and everyone they know who is by far the most self absorbed out of touch industry of them all who know nothing about what the regular American people think - only what high society hollywood/LA/NYC media types think in all thier fabulousness.

"The downtrodden and lower middle class have yet to corner the market on righteous angst, no apologies need be given for giving it voice" - right, regular problems of regular people are of course "righteous angst".

In between the slams and insults are some description of the show I know and love that are almost nice, almost enjoyable but always ruined by some kind of slam at the class of people these characters represented at the time - that would be me and my family and neighbors etc.

My family was not rich, I could not have the latest Guess jeans or a new car, could not compete with other kids at school and all the things they could do that I could not but my parents worked very hard to make sure I could get braces and paid off my dental bills for years after my teeth got knocked out, and yes they had jobs and a car and dressed nicely in not quite name brand clothes and focused on the ability to take care of their kids and make sure they were educated so we could have a better life. Very much like the people of thirtysomething. Are they or we really horrible people for working multiple jobs so we no longer have to take public transportation but can buy a car? Are we horrible people because they saved for a house for years and actually bought one and although never got rich, and struggled with finances, wanted to make the best life they could for their kids? Yet these are the people this booklet demonizes in not even a subtle way because they dared to agonize over such little things as leaving their baby with a baby sitter for the first time or their house becoming a money pit.

I'm so upset that I finally got this show and a really great big booklet that could have had great praise for the show and the audience who kept it alive, inside stories about making the show, etc. but I haven't gotten past page 15 of 36 because they've insulted people like me so many times. After I spent my hard-earned money to buy this release, I'd rather they made it cheaper and threw out the booklet.

Since I am reviewing, I took a moment to look at the rest of the booklet and there is a multi-page episode list with summaries and cast list in it, so I'll give them credit for that part and the few complements they gave the show (although usually backhanded, or followed by a stab in the back). Talk about self-absorbed - they don't even realize that people who watched, loved and would buy the show on dvd are likely people who loved the characters, were like the characters, or wished they could be like the characters, etc? Most people who hated this entire middle class group of people in the 80's are not likely the people who would spend the money to buy this set so save your nastiness for the people who wouldn't dare watch this show because their hatred of the middleclass is so over flowing - oh yes, that would be the very elitist media people who wrote about the show in the booklet. Have a cocktail party with all your fabulous friends and leave us fans out of it, especially since we're paying your way by buying all the shows you release.

Great show, but have you ever heard of "don't bite the hand that feeds you"? They bit mine off, and instead of buying a set as a gift for my mother and sister, I'll lend them mine so they don't have to be tortured by reading the insulting booklet. Bad move to insult your fans, the very people you need so badly to buy your shows.
