DVD Reviews of Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society - Boozed Broozed & Broken-Boned

DVD Review: Is this a joke?!
Summary: 2 Stars

I had a lot of respect for Zakk before I saw this video, but this concert was basically a bunch of cover tunes that Zakk twisted a few licks and changed the words to (ripping off songs by Metallica, Pantera, POD, SysOD, etc.) His solos were souless... just running finger patterns and makin' noises. Just because something is hard for the lower 75% of guitar players to execute doesn't make it good music.
His Star-spangled banner is a bunch of BS and he even plays it the same basic way (as if it were a classic) on 2 different occasions. I would understand the repetition if it was incredibly significant in the technical sense, if it had a complex sequence of sound changes or rhythm loops, or if it was in some way melodically significant like the R.R. solo in 'Over the Mountain,' but the whole point of doing an unmitigated, chaotic SSB is that it's a spontaneous expression. (I seriously doubt Hendrix sat in a hotel room practicing the Woodstock SSB to a metronome)

The guitar lesson, as fun as it was to get in personal with Zakk... the dude is unbelievably sloppy, he can't play the same thing twice, he can't play his own licks in rhythm, (at a slow speed) which is forgivable, as Zakk is obviously drunk 24/7. Seriously, I couldn't believe how sad this video was. A long cry from the artistic, soulful work of Book of Shadows. He also sings much better in the classic rock genre than when immitating Slayer. The quality of this music in comparison with Zakk's work with Ozzy and 'Book of Shadows' may give one an idea of how much influence a real producer (and Pro-tools editing software) has on the final product. If you do like this kind of neanderthal-rock, I'd have to admit that the DVD is a very good value. If all concert dvd's had the same format of extras (ie acoustic cuts, out-takes, private-life snipets, and guitar lessons, I would buy a lot more concert DVD's). I'm glad this review generated so much response (be it negative); the fact that the responses were voiced by BLS fans that can read(a probable rarity) makes the dispute even better. The point has nothing to do with my playing, but I can assure you, my opinion is based on deep understanding of music and guitar playing from a larger perspective than you might guess. My point, if you want to save some dough, you might want rent it before you buy.

Description of Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society - Boozed Broozed & Broken-Boned

Led into battle by the premier rock guitarist for OZZY OSBOURNE, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY have quickly become the bottom line when it comes to pure and unfiltered hard rock excellence. When you mix bone-crushing riffs and great songs with the ferocious six-stringed mastery of Zakk Wylde, it's bound to happen. In their firstever DVD release, BLS shows that is doesn't matter if they're on a larger-than-life arena stage or in a packed, sweaty club, the results are always monstrous.

Recorded live at Harpo's in Detroit, MI in front of a sold out crowd of brew swilling maniacs, Boozed, Broozed & Broken-Boned sees BLS storm through a set of hardhitting material from their previous three studio albums (Sonic Brew, Stronger Than Death, and 1919*Eternal) with Zakk unleashing his incomparable Les Paul magic.

Also, in what is reportedly a first, the band, crowd and crew managed to empty the club of its last drop of beer!

Now fans can witness the pummeling brewtality of this memorable evening in 5.1 digital surround sound along with the brand new, Rob Zombie-directed video for "Stillborn," the smash hit single from the new album The Blessed Hellride...all with a beer supply as deep as their own wallets will allow.
