DVD Reviews of Yossi & JaggerDVD Review: "It's just like being in an American movie!" Summary: 3 Stars
Those viewers who have had the pleasure of seeing Eytan Fox's latest feature Walk On Water, currently in theatrical release, will see on viewing the earlier Yossi and Jagger, that Fox has really evolved as a director. This film is an admirable and worthy attempt to show a discreet gay romance set amongst the Israeli army, but the movie doesn't really translate that well. It's story is rather thin and dramatically deficient, and because there's such a lack of detailed character development, the emotional investment that Fox expects the viewer to give to the two leads, just doesn't quite pay off.
The film focuses on a love affair between two male soldiers Yossi (Ohad Knoller) and Lior (Jagger) (Yehuda Levi). They're part of a platoon of soldiers who are irresolutely stationed at a remote and dangerous Northern outpost along the Lebanese border. Surrounded by fields of snow and barbed wire fences, they exhaust themselves by spending their days doing a lot of grunt work such as digging ditches and burying piles of rancid meat. Most of the time they just hang around being bored, horny, and frustrated. Cooped up in a cavernous claustrophobic mess hall and barracks, they constantly joke about sex, dance music, and what there are going to do when they get out of the military. They're all young and all great looking, and don't take the military that seriously.
Sometimes Yossi and Lior manage to sneak some private time together by going on patrol; in one scene they initiate a playful, good-humored snowball fight with each other, and then share a nice romantic kiss. Yossi is the officious commander, a career officer who's taking life in the army very seriously. Lior is his sensitive second-in-command. More humorous and mischievous than Yossi, Lior continually bates the officer by singing suggestively, serenading him with his guitar, and frantically dancing around to his favourite dance song. They have not told anyone, friend or family, of their clandestine affair, lest they be drummed out of the military.
The problem is there's really only two scenes where Yossi and Lior are actually alone together, and neither of these show them as being particularly intimate - yes, they kiss, joke and laugh, and in one scene, Yossi actually berates Lior for being too possessive and not taking their perilous situation seriously enough. But you never get the sense that they're actually lovers - apart from an oblique sexual dalliance in the snow at the beginning of the film, it's as though the actors, while admittedly having certain chemistry together, are just paying lip service to their roles.
The other problem is that various subplots take the focus away from the two leads. A great deal of attention is given to their superior, the cantankerous colonel Yoel (Sharon Regniano) who arrives unexpectedly for a yet-to-be-announced mission, he's more anxious to sample the culinary wares of the resourceful cook Yaniv (Erez Kahana) and make derisive comments about gays than attend to military business. He's an uncouth macho-man colonel who has a penchant and fondness for younger girls. Goldie (Hani Furstenberg), a sexy blonde recruit is more than willing to sleep with him and she doesn't seem to mind that her boss has only one thing on his mind.
The other subplot involves Goldie's sultry brunette companion Yaeli (Aya Koren). She's in love with Jagger, but unaware of his sexual leanings. The handsome Ofir (Assi Cohen) is constantly courting her; but he's really only a jealous schemer who just wants to get into her pants. The climax of the film is a wasteful, tragic military exercise that takes place when the soldiers go out on a hot ambush to enemy territory. There are terrible consequences for all, but then, after merely 71 minutes the film just stops. Most viewers may appreciate the refreshing economy of expression, but probably wonder why the story wasn't more fully fleshed out. Mike Leonard April 05.
