I have been a fan of the Beatles since their first appearance into the states so many years ago. And even since their break-up in 1970, I have enjoyed their music as individual performers. As a child, I watched their animated TV show and enjoyed singing along with them, as did many other of their fans who also watched it. When Yellow Sumarine came to the matinee in my home town, of course I was amongst the other kids to see it. And even over the years, when it first became available on VHS, I purchased it so my own children could watch it. My recent purchase of Yellow Submarine on DVD, I still enjoy and share now with my grandchildren. They have enjoyed it too. The artistry, amagination of the storyline, the music, certainly evokes a great deal of enjoyment to myself, my children, my grandchildren, and to all the Beatles' fans from the past, present, and will to those in the future. Their music contributions over these many years have been enjoyed by so many millions of music fans and will continue most probably for many more years to come. I am very pleased and proud to add this Beatles - Yellow Submarine DVD to my ever growing Beatle / Paul McCartney / John Lennon / Ringo Starr / George Harrison, collection of DVD's and Music CD Albums, to share with my family often. From KING FEATURES, creators of such low-budget cartoons as BEETLE BAILEY and KRAZY KAT, comes the full-length animated classic, YELLOW SUBMARINE (1968).
This is a superbly crafted film, one that holds up remarkably well. Intense, vivid colors, complexly designed animations, easy-to-recognize characters and an enchanting story are only a few of the picture's highlights.
Best of all are the visuals that illustrate several Beatles tracks.
"Eleanor Rigby," like the song itself is properly British with its quick flashes of English scenery, crowds of faceless people and glimpses of the rundown neighborhood where this sad and lonely woman lived and died.
"Only a Northern Song," combined with its music is almost trance-inducing. Very trippy right from the outset, the sequence culminates with an arc of slowly-moving Beatles above a large cube that hypnotically pulses every 1/24th of a second between day-glo green and lemon yellow.
"Lucy in the Sky" is an outline of a flapperish-looking girl, animated as a sort of rainbow color blotched Toulouse Latrec poster. She dances on the song's upbeat choruses in her flowing dress and feathers.
"When I'm Sixty-Four" explains in animated text that there are more than 33 million minutes in 64 years, then illustrates how long a minute really is, by using giant numbers in a variety of bizarre designs (including characters from the movie) that click by in time to the song.
There's much more to enjoy here. If you're an animation aficionado and have never seen YELLOW SUBMARINE, please do so. It's a treat for the eyes, ears and soul!

The one-hour 1967 BBC TV special, MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR is a curious mix of the mundane, comic and surreal. Several excellent music videos are offset by unscripted confusion and ill-at-ease ad libs from all involved.

Unlike most of the Beatles' catalogue, the tunes here have been remastered and they sound like something new and very fresh. I saw this for the first time last night and was enchanted by the simple sights, though the storyline, such as it is, is almost non-existent, and the movie could have been much better with the actual Beatles' voices, not actors. Still, this is a quaint artifact of 1968, and the soundtrack, on cd, is now vastly superior to the old one.DVD Review: Yellow Submarine

This restored, animated valentine to the Beatles offers viewers the rare chance to see a work that's been substantially improved by its technical facelift, not just supersized with extra footage. Recognizing that its song-studded soundtrack alone makes Yellow Submarine a video annuity, United Artists has lavished a frame-by-frame refurbishment of the original feature, while replacing its original monaural audio tracks with a meticulously reconstructed stereo mix that actually refines legendary original album versions.What emerges is a vivid time capsule of the late '60s and a minor milestone in animation. The music represents the quartet's zenith--Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The story line, cobbled together by producer Al Brodax and a committee of writers, is a broad, feather-light allegory set in idyllic Pepperland, where the gentle citizens are threatened by the nasty, music-hating Blue Meanies and their surreal arsenal of henchmen, with the Beatles enlisted to thwart the bad guys. Visually, designer Heinz Edelmann mixes the biomorphic squiggles, day-glo palette, and Beardsley-esque portraits of Peter Max with rotoscoped still photographs and film; Edelmann's animated collages also nod to Andy Warhol and Magritte in properly psychedelic fashion, which works wonderfully with such terrific songs.
High orthodox Beatlemaniacs can still grouse that the animated Fab Four are (literally) flat archetypes, but that's missing the sheer bloom of the music or the giddy, campy fun of the visuals. Making sense of the story is second to submerging blissfully in the sights and sounds of this video treat. --Sam Sutherland
