DVD Review: Great for a quick ashtanga session

I use this DVD for a quick ashtanga session in the mornings before work when I want a guided practice. I have only done the 45 minute one. Although it obviously doesn't cover every pose, I think it's pretty good for being only 45 minutes! I wouldn't recommend this DVD for someone who has never done ashtanga before, but for those who want a quick practice session, it's pretty good!DVD Review: great routine for those short on time

First off, let me just say that my first intensive study of yoga spoiled me, and I had a teacher who carefully explained form, alignment, and breathing during each and every pose. Since then I think I"ve been very critical of yoga DVDs and I have had a very difficult time finding a series that I liked.
But when I ordered this DVD, it was to get into steady practice after about three years of not practicing at all, and to my surprise and delight, it's been very helpful. Swenson's form is impeccable, and like my first teacher, he takes time to explain the breathing and elaborate on which muscles to lengthen and tense as you go along.
I can't give this DVD 5 stars, however, because he does rush a bit. Perhaps it's because he is limited by his time constraints, but I've always been used to holding the poses much longer, so it was difficult at first for me to keep up. I had to watch the routines two or three times all the way through and pause in the middle of a couple of practices before I could keep up with him at his pace. But once I took the time to re-familiarize myself with the asanas, I did fine. If you have a good book that explains each of the poses at length, I'd recommend studying that as well, since your eyes can't always be on Swenson as you practice.
But I'd say if you're a beginner, or you haven't practiced in a while, you should watch the routine at least once or twice all the way through before you attempt it. Otherwise, you'll be fumbling and you might not be able to keep up. It is challenging, but well worth it, in my opinion. This DVD is a great introduction to the first series, too, and it's perfect for people who, like me, are marooned in the middle of nowhere with no yoga studios nearby, who would like to learn Ashtanga. I highly recommend it.
