DVD Reviews of Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut)DVD Review: Woodstock DVD still rocks Summary: 5 StarsGreat for those old enough to remember and those young enough to find new appreciation.
DVD Review: help! Summary: 5 StarsI love this movie for many reasons and I've reviewed it on the 40th anniversary collector's edition page if you want to see what i think of it. BUT i have a question that i wonder if anyone can help me with because it's been driving me crazy for the LONGEST time:
In the director's cut, the Sly & The Family Stone scene shows a good deal of the song "Higher" coupled with the song "Music Lover" as a medley. You don't hear much of "Dance to the Music" on the dvd.
On both the original soundtrack album and the collector's edition cd box set, the song is presented as "Medley: Dance to the Music/Music Lover/Higher." Which is pretty much what it is.
EXCEPT, on both albums, it leaves out most of "Higher" (except for Sly's little speech about singing along and the "higher!" call+response w/ the audience). Most of the actual SONG, however, is omitted.
I am 1) wondering the reason for this. did they cut it out of the song on the albums or did they cut together two entirely different parts of the performance in the movie?
and more importantly....2) wondering how can i get my hands on the recording of that missing part of the performance?? it's one of my favorite parts of the show!
if anyone can help me, that'd be great! thanks!
DVD Review: classic rock DVD Summary: 5 StarsThis has all the great bands from the late '60's, except the Stones and Beatles. Changed the world.

DVD Review: Great Film to be Made Even Better: Ultimate Collectors' Edition and Blu-Ray are On the Way! Summary: 4 Stars[...]
FOR THE FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY, NEW EDITIONS ARE FINALLY ON THE WAY, INCLUDING SPECIAL LIMITED COLLECTORS' EDITIONS (REGULAR AND BLU-RAY) WITH AN EXCLUSIVE EXTRA (FOURTH) DISC FOR AMAZON CUSTOMERS! Or, for those less adventursome, the "regular" Director's Cut will now come with two discs.
While I must agree with the previous reviewer who finds the current (now, thankfullt, deleted) version of this DVD transfer to be sonically and visually inferior to the VHS version, this is still a great film of a fantastic and pivotal moment in music and social history. The music presented here shows these artists (Hendrix; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Santana (and others)) at their most raw and edgy. These may not be the best performances of some of these songs, but the combination of fresh music, excitement, ragged energy, and exhausted elation more than makes up for the roughness presented in some of the music. IMPORTANTLY, A GORGEOUSLY PACKAGED "ULTIMATE COLLECTORS' EDITION" IS IMMINENTLY DUE (look it up on Amazon), as well as a BLU-RAY VERSION (also to be found on Amazon); so those of you upset by the quality of the current DVD "DIRECTOR'S CUT" have a real treat to look forward to. Yes, I too am dumping my current DVD copy of Woodstock while it's "hot" to wait on the arrival of THE NEW VERSIONS! It IS the 40th ANNIVERSARY, ISN'T IT? No more rain! No more rain!
Description of Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut)3 days. 3-million people. And memories to last a lifetime.Year: 1970Director: Michael WadleighStarring: Jimi Hendrix, Richie Havens, The Who, Crosby, Stills & Nash, much more The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It's more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese), director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director's cut, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film's release in 1970. Eight previously edited segments were restored in 1994, and the original director's cut of Woodstock is now the version most commonly available on videotape and DVD. The film deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, and it's still a stunning achievement. Abundant footage taken among the massive crowd ("half a million strong") expresses the human heart of the event, from skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses, to unpredictable weather, midconcert childbirth, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants. Then, of course, there is the music--a nonstop parade of rock & roll from the greatest performers of the period, including Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Canned Heat, The Who, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Ten Years After, Sly & The Family Stone, Santana, and many more. Watching this ambitious film, as the saying goes, is the next best thing to being there--it's a time-travel journey to that once-in-a-lifetime event. --Jeff Shannon
