DVD Reviews of Wild in the Streets/Gas-s-s-s

DVD Review: Wild in the Attitude
Summary: 4 Stars

I first saw this movie as a teenager and it connected with me for some reason. Some 30 yrs on I remembered the titles and story line vividly, just stuck in my head. It's not a complicated movie but what it does resemble in a youth vs administration/adult culture that existed in the 60's via student organisations such as the "Weathermen" movement. They attempted to overthrow the Amercian administration via demonstrations and procliamed violence. "Wild in the Streets" represents the same idiolgy using 60's pop culture and a good dose of Hollywood to serve up the message. I recommend this movie for a "moment in time" piece. A solid performance from the whole cast. Evil C

DVD Review: 'WILD' is Haywire, essential viewing for Bad Movie Lovers everywhere!
Summary: 5 Stars

With his bedroom eyes, killer cheekbones, and perpetual pout, Christopher Jones had all of Hollywood -- from his father-in-law, Lee Strasberg, and director David Lean to cheapo maestro Samuel Arkoff, who tried to force-feed him to '60s teens -- convinced he'd be the "new" James Dean, the "next" Clift. When they realized that he couldn't act and -- far worse -- inspired no cult following, Jones disappeared pronto. But while he had his minute, movies were custom-designed for him, of which WILD IN THE STREETS is the most haywire.

Jones plays a twenty-two year old multimillionaire rock star ("more famous than Jesus") whose entourage includes Richard Pryor ("drummer, anthropologist, author of The Aborigine Cookbook"), Kevin Coughlin ("at fifteen, the youngest graduate in Yale's history"), and Jone's "latest creature comfort," Diane Varsi ("ex-child star, mystic, vegetarian, acidhead").

When aspiring politician Hal Holbrook woos Jones to perform on live TV as part of his campaign, Jones tells America that he wants the voting age lowered to fourteen in the goofball song "Fourteen or Fight."

Jones -- with his impassioned plea "We outnumber the fuzz. We got more cats than little ol' Mahatma Gandhi had" -- gets Varsi elected to the Senate where, sporting a leather miniskirt, a tattoo, and a Napolean chapeau, she bangs her tamborine before saying, "Mr. Speaker, America's greatest lesson has been teaching the world that getting old is such a drag!" Old-time Senator Ed Begley snaps, "Filthy rabble -- appalling!" but what's really appalling is Shelley Winters as Jones mother, who tries to keep up with the times by donning a long wig, smoking marijuana, and going "under the care of an LSD therapist."

When Jones wants to run for President, he gleans his political strategy from watching Senator Varsi, stoned on acid in his pool, alternately weeping and mewing "Meow -- yeah, that's it, put LSD into the Washington water supply!" It works and President Jones declares "We're going to make thirty a mandatory retirement age, and set up mercy camps" where the oldsters will be forcibly fed LSD.

But some of the over-30s hide away in attics -- among then, Holbrook's wife Millie Perkins and Winters (who once costarred together in another attic for THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK and, even more bizarrely, who both later played Elvis Presley's mother on TV) -- but even when caught and drugged, nothing can tame Winters, who runs amok hollering, "I'm being presented at the court of St. James! The Queen is receiving me! I want feathers!"

Essential viewing, especially for teens who are heavily into "retro" fashion and say they're sorry they missed the '60s.

DVD Review: Still wild after 40 years
Summary: 4 Stars

Shelley Winters is again brilliant and the theme of the film hasnt dated(what gen Yers hasnt thought about getting rid of those pesky baby boomers) However Gas-s-s-s is unwatchable but I'll keep trying earlier in the night.

DVD Review: A Sixties Freak Speaks Out
Summary: 5 Stars

"Wild in the Streets" is aptly named since it is a very wild film, very unusual and original in premise. Christopher Jones, a James Dean lookalike, who sounds like Brando when he speaks, plays a charismatic rock singer in the late sixties. When they lower the voting age to fourteen, he gets elected President of the U.S. and puts everyone over the age of thirty in LSD concentration camps. Shelly Winter provides one of her extremely over the top performances as his mother. You must see the scene where she is interviewed by Pamela Mason -- it is a scream to watch and hilarious! Also, the soundtrack is wonderful and one of the songs "Shape of Things to Come" was on the hit parade and is a great rock tune. The opening of the film literally jumps out at you, filmed during a rock concert featuring Chris/Max Frost and his band the Troopers (Diane Varsi, Richard Pryor, Kevin Coughlin) who all also give give good performances in the film. The movie is highly recommended and is one of my all time favorites. I even own the soundtrack album and also, the Max Frost & the Troopers original album, with songs that didn't make it into film. Go rent this or better yet buy it. You will definitely want to see it over and over again.

DVD Review: 14 or fight
Summary: 3 Stars

This is not a particularly good film, but it is an interesting look at the sixties through a somewhat astigmatic point of view. I use clips from the movie in a sixties pop culture class at the university level. The song Fourteen or Fight is a good example of the sixties attempt to "Rock the Vote."
