DVD Review: A Spooky story with a sad love angle
Summary: 4 Stars
Another dip into the Supernatural pool of EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon). This time there is softer plot line with less gross-out shocks and no evil demons but still has a understandable air of truth about the effects of near-death experiences. Nathan Fillion (of Serenity fame) plays the central character convincingly as a man with a burden of knowledge that can save people but for how long before the natural order of things defeats his successful efforts. The growing love of a nurse he has saved puts him in a terrible dilemma. As the realization of his commitment to set things right leads to a very sad and moving ending. The HD sound was very effective in adding to the shocking effects and eery music.

An in-name-only sequel to the 2005 supernatural thriller with Michael Keaton, White Noise 2 mixes two well-documented paranormal experiences--EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) and NDE (Near Death Experience)--in its story of an unusual gift granted in the wake of a tragedy. The likable Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Desperate Housewives) stars as a man whose near-death experience following the murder of his wife and son grants him the ability to see a halo around those whose death is imminent. Naturally, he sets about to prevent these untimely demises, but discovers that tampering with predestination attracts the attention of sinister forces. Professionally lensed and heavy with visual effects (as well as one impressive set piece involving a falling grand piano), White Noise 2 is buoyed by Fillion and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica, The Bionic Woman) as the cheery nurse who helps him deal with his grief; unfortunately, they're stuck with a dreary and overly complicated script that attempts to assimilate far too many horror movie clichés into one picture. Extras include a whopping 33 minutes of deleted scenes, interviews with real-life individuals who have endured NDE, a short making-of featurette, and a walking tour with Fillion of the allegedly haunted asylum that served as one of the film's locations. -- Paul GaitaBestsellers in DVD
