DVD Reviews of Whales - An Unforgettable Journey (Large Format)

DVD Review: great for kids
Summary: 4 Stars

My 3 yr. old son has been watching this non-stop. He loves it and understands the narrator. It's an excellent 'movie' and very educational. I enjoy this playing in the background more than cartoons!!!
Highly recommend at a used price.

DVD Review: Beautiful footage and sounds, but not enough
Summary: 3 Stars

At the beginning of 'Whales', Patrick Stewart superbly sums up my view of the ocean: "It is a place as alien as space. A fluid world of darkness and cold..." He equally sums up my view of whales: "...creatures so immense and so mysterious, they seem unreal." I have always been a little afraid of the ocean. It reminds us that we are small and vulnerable in comparison to the indifferent vastness of an environment beyond our experience. And the whales themselves have always seemed to me to be eerie manifestations of that foreboding vastness, their haunting songs adding to the unsettling mystery of the spooky depths they echo through.

But then again, I have watched `Star Trek: The Voyage Home' often enough in my life to recognize whales as beautiful and loving creatures whose evident intelligence demands humanity's respect and protection for our mutual benefit. This film also reinforces that truth about whales. This is gorgeous footage, both of underwater and surface whale activities. I learned many fascinating things about their behaviors, including the way they trap and eat fish by literally blowing fast moving bubbles around them, and how filming whales up close can be dangerous since a blow from a hole could knock you unconscious! At the forefront of it all was wonderful photography and audio, and Mr. Stewart's soothing voice.

But there were unfortunate disappointments as well. My biggest complaint is there was not any underwater footage of blue whales, and the VERY brief discussion of them during surface shots (which did admittedly convey their huge size impressively) only revealed info about them I already knew without much insight into their behaviors or songs. In that same vein, I would have liked to have seen more types of whales, such as sperm whales (I have heard these whales actually fight with squids!). Another major complaint I have is the bizarre deviations from the subject matter. For instance, while describing the habitats in which some whales feed, the camera dwells on animals such as penguins, seals, and bears. I realize this was done to fully convey the environment of these areas, but land animals do not seem that relevant to the lives of whales. Plus, given the short amount spent on the blue whales, this seemed all the more unnecessary. And finally, I would have liked to have heard more whale songs in appropriate silence without music. All in all, the film is WAY too short.

But those complaints did not detract from what I did enjoy about the film. And I think you will enjoy it too if you are interested in what a wonderful world we have and the creatures in it. Rent it on Netflicks!

DVD Review: An Excellent IMAX Film
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife and I love whales, and with this impetus we bought the IMAX Whales DVD sight unseen. We were not disappointed. Yanni's musical score provides excellent background music. The sound is of good quality. Best of all this DVD provdes clear footage and is a fun to watch documentary about whales. I have owned the DVD for over four years, and still enjoy watching it. Some of the best footage are the shots of krill, the overhead blue whale footage, and the bubble feeding in Alaska. Most impressive however was when we put it in a PC, and viewed it via a beamer on a blank wall. The IMAX quality came to life and the orce literally seemed to jump out of the screen. This is an effect that did not come out on our television.
Patrick Stewart's commentary is very good, and the variance of whales and other underwater experiences such as dolphins and manta rays is well done. This IMAX film is one to own.

DVD Review: more stupid film editing
Summary: 2 Stars

When the songs of whales were given, there were times when music was played by musicians, and that shouldn't happen. If you are letting us hear a whale, then be silent.

DVD Review: Great footage
Summary: 5 Stars

My son has loved whales, dolphins, orcas, etc. since he was a toddler. I bought this video for him and it is so beautiful. The narration is fairly simple with interesting facts that are not too scientific. This video continually shows animal footage without interviews, etc. that are common in more traditional "documentaries," which is great for kids. There is a lot of underwater footage which I haven't always found in whale videos. I only wish I could watch it in an IMAX theater.
