DVD Reviews of Wanted (Single-Disc Widescreen Edition)DVD Review: Another dumb Jolee Movie Summary: 1 StarsThr story line started out good but ended poorly. It was a typical Angelie Jolee movie - dumb, dumb, dumb.
DVD Review: Style Trumps Substance Summary: 3 StarsIt's ironic that a commercial for a video game precedes "Wanted". For a good hour or so the film seemed like a lot of white noise and blinding visuals. It's at about the halfway mark the story starts to kick in and there's some interesting plot twists. Alas, it's too little too late. Even at this juncture the director's in-your-face style overwhelms the picture. If they were going for "The Matrix" somebody should have told the makers of this film that style of "The Matrix" went hand-in-hand with the story the Wachowski's were trying to tell. Interesting but no dice.
DVD Review: Action is not always enough Summary: 3 StarsI expected a lot from this film! Man, you've got Jolie and Freeman and this promising McAvoy. Plus, it is directed by the same man who created Night Watch and Day Watch (two really enjoyable and open-minded urban-fantasy films). This film is disappointing, no matter how hard I try to appreciate its inventions, Matrix-like moves and sensuality that Jolie brings to any movie. Too bad, 'Wanted' is just mediocre when it could've been great a movie.
The story is simple, characters are far from simple (where the hell all these assassins come from?), but the movie focuses on being simple. Main characters are pretty interesting, but these different characters are sacrificed way too easily. Or, maybe it's just the fact that there's no real chemistry between McAvoy and Jolie?! I expected the worst from the start and it doesn't go very far from that. The movie aims for the sequel, that's for sure. I really hope Jolie manages to find a better script, a film that really knocks my brains out. She has all the qualities for doing a film that would be the future's classical action film. This film is not what I wanted.
DVD Review: Horrid Summary: 2 StarsI can't believe Morgan Freeman showed up for this film. It is gross! You would have to love violence, cursing, hate, brutality, and incredibly sick characters in order to tolerate this film.
DVD Review: Forgettable Summary: 2 StarsPretty forgettable movie. After seeing great action films like 'Shoot 'Em Up', this one comes off pretty lame and all smoke-and-mirrors. Barely give it 2-stars, and only because there are a couple action sequences are the decent. But overall, weak.
Description of Wanted (Single-Disc Widescreen Edition)A young man finds out his long lost father is an assassin. And when his father is murdered the son is recruited into his fathers old organization & trained by a man names sloan to follow in his dads footsteps. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 12/02/2008 Starring: James Mcavoy Angelina Jolie Run time: 110 minutes Rating: R As the impresario behind gravity-defying Russian blockbuster Night Watch, it's inevitable that Hollywood would come calling for Timur Bekmambetov. With a studio budget and an international cast, including two Oscar winners, Timur cooks up a Hong Kong-styled actioner bursting with fast cars and big guns. Our unlikely hero is mild-mannered Chicago accountant Wesley Gibson (Atonement's James McAvoy), whose father died when he was a tot. Wesley never learned to stand up for himself, and his girlfriend, boss, and best buddy all take advantage until the seductive Fox (Angelina Jolie) rescues him from a sharpshooter named Cross (The Pianist's Thomas Kretschmann). After which, she whisks him away to a mansion on the edge of town to meet the other members of the Fraternity, where leader Sloan (Morgan Freeman) informs Wesley that Cross, a rogue agent, executed his father. Sloan believes Wesley has the goods to take him out, so he undergoes the Fraternity's brutal training regimen (Marc Warren and Common dish up some of the abuse). When he's ready, Sloan sends him out to fulfill his duty, but matters become complicated when Wesley finds out someone isn't telling the truth, leading our former milquetoast to exact an elaborate revenge. For those who've been following McAvoy's career to date, Wanted will surely come as a surprise. In adapting Mark Millar's comic series, Timur offers buckets of blood and a smidgen of depth, but fans of The Matrix and Mr. and Mrs. Smith will want to give this one a look. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
