DVD Reviews of Walk

DVD Review: Engaging, insightful and funny look at the thru-hiker phenomenon
Summary: 5 Stars

What I really liked about this film is the way the film maker doesn't stay too long on any one topic or person. It bops around, but cleverly and compassionately so among spots on and near the Pacific Crest Trail. Good variety of locales, cool on-trail footage, funny stories, some insights into hiking long distances and a respect for his subjects make it a must for anyone even remotely interested in long-distance backpacking and those who partake of it. Strongly recommended. The follow-up to this film, "Still Walking", is equally good, if not better.

DVD Review: A great film based on through-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.
Summary: 5 Stars

Scott Herriott's "Walk" was the first film/documentary that I saw on the Pacific Crest Trail and it was a motivating factor for me to hike the trail in 2005. I first saw the film at the annual Pacific Crest Trail "Kick Off" event which occurs each year before hikers set out in anticipation of completing or section hiking the trail. "Walk" provides the viewer with a great definition of who "through-hikers" are, the crazy things they do on-and-off-trail, and it depicts the beautiful scenery in certain sections of trail and in town stops along the way. Before I set out on the trail, I wondered what certain situations would present and Scott's film did a great job of giving me a preliminary sense of discovery, while keeping the rest of the experience a mystery. As a long-distance hiker of the Pacific Crest Trail in 2005, I highly recommend "Walk" to anyone who is interested in hiking and to those of you who are seasoned hikers.....a must have for the hiker's Orientation Class - Hiking 101. (Also, check out, "Still Walking", Scott Herriott's follow-up to "Walk."

DVD Review: Great Portrayal of Hikers, but not the Hike
Summary: 3 Stars

Don't get me wrong; I like this DVD a lot, but I had been kind of hoping for a lot more trail footage, especially with the incredible scenery and awesome wildlife that the Sierras and the Cascades contain. I found that I got a great sense of the thru-hiker subculture and the Trail Angel phenomenon, but missed a lot of the actual trail upon which this whole culture was based; kind of like hearing a football team talk about their Superbowl win without having seen the game. There are some nice trail shots, but they are short, and don't give any idea of where they are. A better video of a thru-hike experience is Michael Daniel's "Walking With Freedom", about one man's AT experience; this video actually shows the trail, the wildlife, the scenery, and the ups and downs of a hike. I realize that doing this on the PCT is a tall order, but hey, Daniel did it on the entire AT; there has to be someone crazy enough to chronicle an entire PCT hike on video, or at least big chunks of it, for the rest of us who may never get to do it.
That being said, I still like the video for its quirky, Woodstock-like portrayal of the hikers and their watering holes; the stories are very entertaining, some of them side-splittingly hilarious; the characters are certainly colorful, particularly the Israeli guy. I just wish the filmmaker had spent a little less time in the trail towns and a little more out on the actual trail.

DVD Review: Off the wall approach hooked me
Summary: 5 Stars

The off the wall approach to telling this story quickly got me involved. There are a number of video clips of segments of the trail, but the focus is on where the hikers gather as they encounter the outside world - the kickoff meeting, Kennedy Meadows, VVR, the pancake place and others. Most of the time you are hearing them talk to each other about hiking, feet, whatever. They have just hit a high point on the trail so are upbeat and very animated. Maybe not truly representative of the average mood of a thru-hiker, but it makes a fascinating story. Any long distance hiker is going to enjoy this video. Potential thru-hikers and curious non hikers are going to be caught up by the enthusiasm.

DVD Review: Entertaining and enjoyable
Summary: 5 Stars

Walk is an amusing look at some of the characters who attempt to walk from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail. As people who are considering trying that trek ourselves, my wife and I have watched this twice in the week that we have had it. Although non hikers would find the DVD enjoyable, I think that hikers of all levels would really appreciate the video.

Description of Walk

Scott Herriott, a self-proclaimed lazy***, had no desire to hike 2,658 miles (at least in the same calendar year). So, instead, he went out and interviewed those who were attempting to do so. From late April to early Oct. of 2003 he tracked down over 100 intrepid/insane souls who were in the middle of committing a half year of their lives attempting to trek the Pacific Crest Trail...one of the worlds most geographically diverse paths that winds from the Mexican border in California up to the Canadian border in/out of Washington state. The result is "Walk", an insightful and funny look at those who partake of the journey that is long-distance hiking. The film was an official selection of the Greenwich, Malibu and Olympia film festivals in 2004. Along the way Scott learned of motivations, how regular folk smell to long-distance hikers, and, surprisingly, that hawks sometimes attack unsuspecting adventurers. Most of the walkers have trail names like Lugnut, Batteries Included, and So Far (who deemed most of those who attempt the hike as Bohemian Masochists). For Potato Picker, its his second long-distance hike and since he enjoyed his "...first mid-life crisis so much... he thought hed have another. Scott also learned of the beloved stops that these trekkers congregate at...including Kennedy Meadows General Store (the beginning of the much loved and feared High Sierra), Seiad Valley Cafe (home to an infamous Pancake Challenge that only 7 have conquered in 17 years), and Pooh Corner (a house where a retired husband and wife (Trail Angels) allow the tired and the filthy to hang out for a day or two and climb their indoor rock wall if they so desire). If you love the outdoors and wry humor, this is a must for your DVD collection.
