DVD Reviews of WWE: Starrcade - The Essential Collection

DVD Review: WCW The Essential Starrcade is a 5 Star DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

The Best of Starr Cade
The Story- This is a real strong point of this DVD. While the matches were good on this DVD not all of them were great. The story behind this has such legacy its awesome. There has been a war between WWE and WCW for a while but Vince McMahon took it to a whole new level as he tried to kill WCW and Starrcade from the early stages but Starr Cade would not go down without a fight. It goes on to show the high points and low points of Starrcade and the classic matches and tragic moments as well. While this part only lasts an hour it is worth the watch and it really adds to the DVD. Story Rating 10/10.
1. Rowdy Roddy Piper vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan Starrcade December 29 1996 Match of The Decade- I have a feeling this match was only put on the DVD because of the star power. The match itself would have been great 10 years ago but both men were ageing so it was not the 5 star match you would expect. In fact most of the match was slow but the shocker of the match had to be when Rowdy Roddy Piper beat Hulk Hogan with a sleeper hold. Winner Rowdy Roddy Piper Match Rating 6/10.
2. Sting vs. The Great Muta Starrcade December 13 1989 Iorn Man Singles Tournament Match- Well this was sure a different feel than the first match on the DVD. This was when sting was really young and mobile so it had a nice pace to the match. Sting had been the icon of WCW for years through the good times and the bad. A nice pace match here with good back and forth action. Winner Sting. Match Rating 7.5/10.
3. Barry Windham and Brian Pillman vs. Ricky Steamboat and Shane Douglas Starrcade December 28 1992 Unified World Tag Team Title Match- Well I have to say this was a pretty good tag team match. A lot of experience was going into this match and it paid off in the ring. Not a so called five star match but a good spot for #22 on this DVD. There is not a lot to say about this match but it was solid tag team wrestling. Winners and new Tag Team Champions Barry Windham and Brian Pillman. Match Rating 7.5/10.
4. Goldberg vs. Kevin Nash Starrcade December 27 1998 WCW World Heavyweight Championship Match- Well once again I feel this match was put on this DVD because of the star power and Goldberg's winning streak. Goldberg had won over 170 matches at this point and was keeping WCW on fire and no one had ever seen something like this. The match itself was a little boring but the suspense was off the chart and the ending even better. Winner and New WCW Champion Kevin Nash. Match Rating 5/10.
5. Battlebowl Match Starrcade December 29 1991- When WCW came up with this match it was obvious they were trying to make themselves a different product than WWE. It seemed this match had a feel of the survivor series elimination match. The negative thing about this match was there were too many people in it to being with and you know the match is going to be hard to watch when you can't even follow the rules. On the positive side once they started to get people eliminated it was easier to follow. Overall a unique concept but one that was hard to catch on to. Winner Sting. Match Rating 6/10.
6. Dustin Rhodes vs. Stunning Steve Austin Starrcade December 27 1993 2 out of 3 falls for the WCW United Sates Championship- A lot of people may be more familiar with these people as Golddust and Stone Cold Steve Austin. I was looking forward to this match but it seemed like both men had a lack of energy for the match and did not want to be there. People must remember this was before stone cold got big. The wrestling itself wasn't bad but a little but slow of a match but a surprising ending as the match ended in 2 falls. Winner and new WCW United States Champion Stunning Steve Austin . Match Rating 6/10.
Disk 2
1. Road Warriors vs. Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard Starrcade November 26 1987 NWA World Tag Team Championship Match- I have to say after a moderate disk 1 of matches at best this was a great way to kick off disk 2. The road warriors one of the best tag teams ever was sure to deliver a great match. This was an old school tag team wrestling match but one that was not to slow to watch. The ending was disappointing after such a great match but the match is one to definitely watch for. Winners Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard. Match Rating 8.5/10.
2. Rey Mysterio vs. Jushin Thunder Liger Starrcade December 29 1996- Here come the good matches on this DVD. While WCW definitely made there money with guys such as Hulk Hogan, Piper, Scott Hall the good matches were when the undercard came into play. Mysterio came into WCW highly motivated and you could see it in this match. Just a fast pace match that is so quick you have to make sure you fallow everything. One of the best matches on this dvd and you will certainly enjoy it. Winner Jushin Thunder Liger. Match Rating 9.5/10.
3. Rock n Roll Express vs. The Midnight Express Starrcade November 26 1987 in a Scaffold Match- For those who don't know what a scaffold match is it's two teams start on a scaffold 20 feet above the ring and the first team to through both members off the scaffold wins the match. I am not usually a fan of these matches because there is only so much you can do on a scaffold. This match they tried everything including weapons and sick bumps. While it is not the best match on this DVD I give all 4 men credit for putting their bodies on the line. Winners The Rock and Roll Express. Match Rating 7.5/10.
4. Rick Flair vs. Lex Lugar Starrcade December 26 1988 for the NWA World Heavyweight Title- For years WCW was building up Lex Lugar to be the next Rick Flair and who could blame them. Lex Lugar physically was the Hulk Hogan of the WWE. To me Lugar and flairs styles meshed well. A great match here with power and technical wrestling you couldn't ask for much more and I think this match should be higher on this list great match. Winner and Still NWA World Heavyweight Champion Rick Flair. Match Rating 9/10.
5. Eddie Guerrero vs. Shinjiro Otani Starrcade December 27 1995- This was another match such as the rey mysterio match and Eddie Guerrero was just starting to come up in the wrestling business. One reason I really preferred WCW over WWE was they gave there cruiserweights a chance and their matches in that case were a lot better. Just another fast pace and high flying match. Good stuff here. Winner Shinjiro Otani. Match Rating 9/10.
6. Dusty Rhodes and Sting vs. Road Warriors Starrcade December 26 1988 NWA World Tag Team Championship Match- While this match was so star studded going in it did just not click for me. I think the down factor was dusty Rhodes. I personally have never been able to adapt to his style of wrestling which made the match harder to watch. Not much to say here average tag match. Winners Sting and Dusty Rohdes . Match Rating 6.5/10.
7. Sting vs. Big Van Vader Starrcade December 28 1992 King of Cable Tournament Final Match- A lot of the heels in WCW seemed weak to me back in the day but if there was one heel that played his role well it was big van vader. He had wrestling skills and he could easily get the crowd to hate him with no problem. This match was not there best out of all their matches but solid none of the less. Winner Sting. Match Rating 7/10.
8. Dusty Rhodes vs. Rick Flair- Like I pointed out earlier I did not like dustys wrestling that much and it seemed to slow for me. But when you have a wrestler with the capability of rick flair anything is possible. A great technical wrestling match hear and I feel flair really carried this match. Winner Rick Flair. Match Rating 8/10.
9. Eddie Guerrero vs. Dean Malenko Starrcade December 1997 WCW Cruiserweight Championship Match- I felt this was a nice way to close off the second disk. While it is always nice to see the big superstars it ultimately is the undercard and usually the middle and cruiserweights that steal the show. Both men have a great respect for each other and traveled the world together. I felt both men should have been given more time and the match would have been better. Still a good match. Winner and still WCW Cruiserweight Champion Eddie Guerrero. Match Rating 8/10.
Disk 3
1. Road Warriors vs. The Steiner Brothers Starrcade December 13 1989 Iron Man Tag Team Tournament Match- On paper this would seem like a match of the year candidate if not a match of the year but this match in the end will be looked at mediocre because of all the talent they had in the ring. It was weird these tag teams had faced each other before and had good chemistry but it did not work in this match. Not much to say but a little bit slow but even saying all that a decent match and it's worth a look. Winners The Steiner Brothers. Match Rating 7.5/10.
2. 3 count vs. Jamie Knoble and Even Karagias vs. Jung Dragons Starrcade December 17 2000 Ladder Match for a Contract for the World Cruiserweight Championship- Well if there was anything positive in the dying days of WCW it was the younger guys and especially the cruiserweight division. If there is any indication that the WWE took advantage of the opportunity they had once they bought WCW is this match because these men were the men who set a whole other standard as far as wrestling is included. What I liked about this match was that it was different then a normal ladder because the pace was so quick. There was only one botched spot in the whole match which is great considering all the high flying action. So many great spots in this match and is a match that you have to check out. It is my match of the DVD and it gets 11/10 for being so good. Winners 3 Count. Match Rating 11/10.
3. Sting vs. Rick Flair Starrcade December 13 1989 Iron Man Singles tournament- As hyped as I was for this match to me it did not live up to my expectations. That is not saying that this wasn't a good match but I had so high expectations that I think it ruined it for me. If you go in the match just to watch it you will appreciate it much more. Anyway match wise it was still very solid and great technical wrestling when both men were in there prime. Worth a couple looks and a good match overall. Winner Sting. Match Rating 8/10.
4. Greg Valentine vs. Roddy Piper Starrcade November 24 1983 in a dog collar match- Usually I am not the biggest fan of matches that have roddy piper in them but this was an exception. I always felt piper was the better guy to cut a promo or be a manager but this was the type of match were he proved he could hang with the men. He was always good just not my style of wrestling. This was an absolutely brutal match and one of the bloodiest matches you will see for matches back in that day and age. So many nasty shots with the collar and just a brutal match that added to the great feud. Winner Roddy Piper. Match Rating 8/10.
5. Road Warriors vs. The Midnight Express Starrcade November 27 1986 in a Scaffold Match- This was a unique concept for a match and was a big draw at the time but the match itself was not all the hype would lead you to believe. This was not the wrestlers fault at all because there is no room to move on the scaffold so the did the best the could. Not much to see here except a few big bumps off the top of the scaffold. Good spot to look for is when Jim Cornett falls off the scaffold. Winners The Road Warriors. Match Rating 6/10.
6. Sting vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan Starrcade December 28 1997 for the WCW World heavyweight Championship- These were the days when WCW was on top. They were killing WWE in Ratings PPV buys and the just signed WWE biggest Star Brett Hart. Everything was on their side and the match that they had been building to for a year was going to pay off big time. If we are talking match quality it wasn't the greatest wrestling wise but there was so much hype behind the match that it still made you on the edge of your seat. The biggest Star of the 80's Hulk Hogan going against the biggest Star of WCW ever and most loyal. Lots of near falls in this match. The interference of Brett Hart shocked people and the decision was reversed and Hulk Hogan ended up losing the title to Sting and the crowd went crazy. As a result of the build WCW drew one of the biggest PPV butyrate's of all time 1.8 million buys in the US alone and over 2 million worldwide. Winner and new WCW Champion Sting. Match Rating 7.5/10.
7. Rick Flair vs. Harley Race Starrcade November 24 1983 in a steel cage match for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship- While some people consider this the greatest match they have seen I think that's because of the time period they were into wrestling. It was a bloodbath and a very emotional speech by flair after the match but to me the pace of the match was a little too slow for me to make it a 5 Star classic. Still a great match and one to remember. Winner and new NWA World Heavyweight Champion Rick Flair. Match Rating 8/10.
8. Magnum T.A. vs. Tully Blanchard Starrcade November 28 1985 in a steel cage I quit match for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship- You talk about a great match our looking at it right here. For people that did not get to see a lot of matches with Magnum T.A. in them he was a huge draw back in the 80's and if weren't for the car accident he got in his career would have been a top level contender. This match in my opinion is the second best on the DVD and very brutal for a 1980's match. Even more blood than the dog collar match with piper. Just a very classic match and one that goes down as one of my favorites in wrestling history. Winner and new NWA Champion Magnum T.A. Match Rating 10/10.
9. Rick Flair vs. Vader Starrcade December 27 1993 for the WCW Heavyweight Championship with Rick Flairs Career on the line- Well you talk about the biggest heel in WCW at the time you have it here with Rick Flair the biggest face in the company of WCW and even when he was gone people were still chanting for him to come back. You couldn't have a bigger scenario for the WCW championship and rick flairs career on the line. Overall a great match and the big man factor worked really well in this match. Overall my third favorite match on this DVD. Winner and still WCW Champion Rick Flair. Match Rating 9.5/10.
Well Overall I would say this is a must have DVD if you were a fan of WCW with its early work and even some of its latter stuff you will be happy. A lot of the matches on this disk are older but there is a nice complement with matches like the cruiserweight ladder match. Overall I would give WCW Best Of Starrcade a score of 196.5/250= 78% which means this is a perfect DVD. In terms f matches there really isn't a lot of bad matches on this DVD and while not every single one is a 5 star match there are enough good ones that balance them out. The story helps as well as it was a solid hour long giving everyone a background into the story of Starrcade. This is a must pick up DVD if you can afford it go get it now.
