DVD Reviews of WWE: Satan's Prison - The Anthology of the Elimination ChamberDVD Review: Bear Witness To The Elimination Chamber! Summary: 5 Stars
Possibly the most barbaric match that WWE has, The Elimination Chamber has produced some of the most intense and brutal action ever seen in a wrestling ring. Even by today's more sanitized WWE, it still has some 'ouchy' moments!
I will review this by Disc with each match having a WINNER, REAL WINNER, REAL LOSER, BEST PERFORMANCE and WORST BEATING! Let's get to it:
DISC 1
HHH Vs. Shawn Michaels Vs. Chris Jericho Vs. Booker T. Vs. Kane Vs. Rob Van Dam (Survivor Series 2002 for the World Heavyweight Championship) - This was the very first E.C. match ever held and is still considered by many to be the best (though others claim that the New Year's Revolution 2005 E.C. is the best ever, more on that one later)!
In this one, we saw strong performances from all involved but a particularly gutsy performance by HHH who was injured during the match thanks to a botched Five Star Frog Splash by RVD as Rob's left knee jammed into "The Game"'s throat! Amazingly, HHH finished the match as he was finally defeated by Shawn Michaels. This would be, as it turns out now, Shawn's final World singles title win.
WINNER: Shawn Michaels
REAL WINNER: Shawn Michaels as he completed a comeback after being gone for 4 years and having only one other match prior to this and that was at SummerSlam 2002 against HHH!
REAL LOSER: HHH who, despite a gutsy performance, ended up in a hospital immediately after this match.
BEST PERFORMANCE: Rob Van Dam. Despite the botched frog splash and being eliminated, he seemed to adjust to the environment the best in this bout and was very innovative in his offense.
WORST BEATING: RVD & HHH. Both took their share of hard bumps! HHH being worse as he, as stated earlier, ended up in a hospital afterwards.
HHH Vs. Shawn Michaels Vs. Chris Jericho Vs. Randy Orton Vs. Goldberg Vs. Kevin Nash (SummerSlam 2003 for the World Heavyweight Championship) - In this second ever E.C. contest, HHH had a little help this time in the form of Evolution members "Nature Boy" Ric Flair and Randy Orton (though Orton was one of the opponents in this match). The match itself started off good with Michaels and Jericho and continued when Orton got into the match. It slows down when Nash hits the ring but, thankfully, he's eliminated during his surge. HHH wasn't involved for most of the contest even when his pod was opened thanks to Michaels' "Sweet Chin Music"! It became a glorified squash when Goldberg got in as he pretty much tore through everyone! Ends when HHH uses his trusty sledgehammer to knock out "Da Man" as he tried to spear tackle him! HHH survives this one.
WINNER: HHH
REAL WINNER: HHH as he survived with his World title intact.
REAL LOSER: Goldberg. Though he was dominant, this loss pretty much squashed his momentum in WWE. He would later win the World Title from HHH a month after this match BUT it would've been better for him to win it here as he had great momentum going into this match.
BEST PERFORMANCE: Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho with honorable mention to Randy Orton.
WORST BEATING: Randy Orton, particularly from Nash's powerbomb and Goldberg's spear and other power moves.
HHH Vs. Chris Jericho Vs. Chris Benoit Vs. Randy Orton Vs. Batista Vs. Edge (New Year's Revolution 2005 for the World Heavyweight Championship) - In case you haven't read the other excellent reviews and in case you think you need your eyes checked, that is NOT a misprint that Chris Benoit's name is there! He is in fact shown in this E.C. True, some of the commentary concerning him has been edited out (which is rather silly to me, if people can't get over that this was in 2005 that's their problem), I am pleased that he's shown at all. True, WWE could've took the easy way out but chose not too and for that, I give them a thumbs up. While I might not like Chris Benoit the human being, editing history is an even BIGGER pet peeve with me.
Anyway, on the E.C. itself, its considered one of the best (if not THE best) E.C.'s of all time! Everyone gave maximum effort. Adding to it was Shawn Michaels as a special referee in this match. Surprisingly, with the exception of when Edge provoked him into a "SMC", he was objective during the whole contest. Some of the camera angles have been changed but it affects the viewing of the match very little. In fact, a couple of the new angles actually makes it BETTER! In the end, HHH wins his 10th world championship.
WINNER: HHH
REAL WINNER: Batista. Though he lost, "The Animal" gained great momentum and fan support as a result of his performance in this match.
REAL LOSER: Randy Orton. In an opposite way, he lost a lot of momentum and push after this match! It took him a long time to really get back to that main event level.
BEST PERFORMANCE: While everyone gave it their all, I have to give the nod to Batista because he was so dominant during his time in the E.C. Honorable mention goes to the former "Canadian Chris'" (Benoit/Jericho) as well.
WORST BEATING: HHH. By rights, he should've lost this one because everyone got in his behind here!
Disc 1 also has four promos promoting various Elimination Chambers. There are also segments with Todd Grisham discussing the Chamber and its various participants including an interview with Batista prior to showing the NYR '05 chamber match.
DISC 2
John Cena Vs. Carlito Vs. Chris Masters Vs. Kurt Angle Vs. Shawn Michaels Vs. Kane (New Year's Revolution 2006 for the WWE Championship) - In this one, its best remembered not for the chamber match itself but for what happened afterwards! More on that in a moment.
As for the bout itself, it was a pretty good affair with pretty good performances from all involved. The weakest, incidentally enough, came from Cena himself! After starting the match with Shawn Michaels and pretty much getting his can kicked for most of the match, Cena survives and retains his WWE title......ONLY TO LOSE IT MOMENTS LATER WHEN EDGE DECIDED TO CASH IN 'MONEY IN THE BANK'! LOL!
WINNER: John Cena
REAL WINNER: Edge, who smartly waited for his spot to cash in MITB to win his first WWE title.
REAL LOSER: Kurt Angle, who was robbed after having the most dominant performance in the contest!
BEST PERFORMANCE: Kurt Angle, who kicked a** in this one! You must see the booty-whippin' he puts on nearly everyone!
WORST BEATING: Shawn Michaels & John Cena. They both took a good one here and both were the 'crimson mask' (as the late Gordon Solie would say)!
The Big Show Vs. Hardcore Holly Vs. C.M. Punk Vs. Test Vs. Rob Van Dam Vs. Bobby Lashley (WWECW December To Dismember for the WWECW Championship) - As you see by my heading, the only connection that WWE's ECW had with the original was the initials! That's why I tend to refer to their version as "WWECW" because it was a sanitized version of the original.
That being said, this E.C. has the reputation of being the worst E.C. of all time. I don't think that's totally fair because the first half of this match is actually pretty good! Things go south once both C.M. Punk and RVD are eliminated however! Anyway, Bobby Lashley (who is now an MMA fighter) wins the WWECW championship.
WINNER: Bobby Lashley
REAL WINNER: Bobby Lashley, who received a decent push afterwards before quiting WWE in the latter part of 2007.
REAL LOSER: Fans of the original ECW!
BEST PERFORMANCE: RVD and C.M. Punk as they honored what ECW used to be in this match!
WORST BEATING: Again, RVD and C.M. Punk. Punk, particularly, took some nasty bumps!
The Undertaker Vs. Batista Vs. Finlay Vs. MVP Vs. Big Daddy V Vs. The Great Khali (Smackdown/ECW Chamber Match. Winner gets a World Title shot at WrestleMania 24) - This one was one of two Chamber matches at No Way Out 2008. This one was not a great one as The Undertaker and Batista kept it from being totally crap. MVP DOES take the bump of the bout when he's tossed from one of the chamber pods into the ring! Ends when UT reverses a powerslam into a tombstone piledriver on Batista! I should note that they started this match and ended it!
WINNER: The Undertaker
REAL WINNER: The Undertaker. He went on to win another world title and keep his undefeated streak at WM!
REAL LOSER: The Great Khali as he hasn't really main evented anything since this match.
BEST PERFORMANCE: Undertaker/Batista. They started the bout and ended it!
WORST BEATING: The Undertaker! Nearly everyone got their blows in on him in this one.
HHH Vs. Shawn Michaels Vs. Chris Jericho Vs. Jeff Hardy Vs. Umaga Vs. JBL (RAW Chamber Match. Winner gets a WWE Championship shot at WrestleMania 24) - This one was the better of the two at No Way Out 2008 as these men pulled out all stops. It begins with rivals Michaels and Jericho and pretty much the action stays up the whole time with a great finish between HHH and Hardy at the end. HHH wins and gets his shot but it ends up being a Triple Threat Bout involving John Cena (that's a whole 'nother story).
WINNER: HHH
REAL WINNER: HHH as he once again main evented WrestleMania.
REAL LOSER: Jeff Hardy as he was suspended again for failing the Wellness Program for the 2nd time shortly after this match.
BEST PERFORMANCE: Umaga as he pretty much dominated most of the time he was in the match!
WORST BEATING: Umaga at the end as he took the finishers of Jericho, Michaels, HHH and Hardy before being eliminated!
On this disc, we have an interview with John Cena on his first chamber match in addition to review of the other chamber matches.
DISC 3
Edge Vs. HHH Vs. Undertaker Vs.Jeff Hardy Vs. Vladimir Kozlov Vs. The Big Show (Smackdown Chamber Match for the WWE Championship/No Way Out 2009) - In this one, the shocker is that during the first 5 minute period, Edge gets eliminated by Jeff Hardy! As a result, we were guaranteed a new WWE champion this night! Things slow down when Kozlov and The Big Show get in but pick back up when HHH and UT get in! Wasn't the best chamber match but it did have a classic battle to end it between "The Dead Man" and "The Game" with HHH winning another world championship!
WINNER: HHH
REAL WINNER: The fans as they were treated to a classic battle between two WWE icons at the end.
REAL LOSER: Edge! This is the only time to date that a champion was eliminated within the first 5 minute period of this match!
BEST PERFORMANCE: UT & HHH
WORST BEATING: Jeff Hardy without a doubt!
John Cena Vs. Rey Mysterio Vs. Kane Vs. Mike Knox Vs. Chris Jericho Vs. Kofi Kingston* (RAW Chamber Match for the World Heavyweight Championship/No Way Out 2009) - I have a star next to Kofi's name because he never actually got into the match. In a sinister but brilliant move, Edge takes out Kofi and inserts himself into this E.C. The officials allow it to stand even though Edge isn't a RAW competitor!
In any case, this match was much better paced than the Smackdown one. For Cena haters, this one is for you as you get to see John Cena get squashed by Mysterio, Jericho and Edge with their respective signature moves en route to his elimination! LOL! We also get a classic bout between Rey and Edge which ends with Edge winning the World Heavyweight Championship!
WINNER: Edge
REAL WINNER: Edge for pulling off this move.
REAL LOSER: Kofi Kingston who didn't even get a chance to compete!
BEST PERFORMANCE: Rey Mysterio (honorable mention to Chris Jericho as well)
WORST BEATING: Officially, Rey Mysterio! Unofficially, Kofi Kingston!
Sheamus Vs. John Cena Vs. HHH Vs. Randy Orton Vs. Ted Dibiase Vs. Kofi Kingston (RAW Chamber Match for the WWE Championship/Elimination Chamber 2010) - In this one, Sheamus is on a roll as WWE champion though the odds are against him. We also have a shaky alliance between Dibiase and Orton as well as a rivaries all over the place from the recent past (Orton Vs. Cena, Cena Vs. HHH, Orton Vs. HHH, Orton Vs. Kingston). The match is pretty good but the ending is too quick as Cena makes HHH tap out to the STF. HOWEVER, in a deja vu moment, Cena is forced to defend the WWE championship against Smackdown's Batista! This "match" is over quickly as Batista takes the WWE title!
WINNER: John Cena
REAL WINNER: Batista as he used his alliance with Vince McMahon to get a title match right after the Chamber bout
REAL LOSER: John Cena, who gets punked after winning a chamber match AGAIN! LOL!
BEST PERFORMANCE: Kofi Kingston. Though he lost, he definitely had the best performance of the competitors here.
WORST BEATING: Kofi Kingston. Particularly when Orton and Dibiase got their hands on him, including putting his head between the chain-links! Aggh!
The Undertaker Vs. Chris Jericho Vs. John Morrison Vs. R-Truth Vs. C.M. Punk Vs. Rey Mysterio (Smackdown Chamber Match for the World Heavyweight Title/Elimination Chamber 2010) - This was the better of the two Chamber matches this night as everyone gave it their best effort. Also, I should note that UT gets burned by pyro while making his way to the ring! The commentators try to hide it by saying "he can't wait to get into the chamber" when in reality, he was getting his coat off to keep from being burnt up!
As for the match itself, it was very well done and carried by Jericho, Mysterio and Punk. John Morrison had his moments as well for his first time in the chamber. It ends with a classic toe to toe between Jericho and UT which was marred by the unexpected appearance of Shawn Michaels! He superkicked UT, thus allowing Jericho to win the World Title and forcing his (Undertaker) hand into a classic match (which turned out to be Shawn's final one) at WrestleMania 26.
WINNER: Chris Jericho
REAL WINNER: Shawn Michaels as he got what he wanted and that was one more match with The Undertaker
REAL LOSER: Can't really say here. I guess a stretch would be C.M. Punk considering how his career has gone since this match!
BEST PERFORMANCE: Chris Jericho
WORST BEATING: John Morrison, particularly when UT got his hands on him! Took a nasty chokeslam on the steel floor of the chamber! Ouch!
Overall, I was very pleased with this release! I would recommend a buy, not something I say about a WWE release these days all that often. I also want to give WWE some credit. They could've easily taken the easy way out concering NYR '05 with Chris Benoit but they didn't! That's another reason for the thumbs up on this one. I'd give this one a chance folks!
