DVD Reviews of WWE - Rey Mysterio 619DVD Review: Worth it for the old footage. Summary: 3 StarsThis is only worth it for the classic matches. The new stuff is blah.
DVD Review: Cool Video Summary: 5 StarsFun video. Shows Rey in his home with his family and in Mexico where he started fighting. Has some fights too.
DVD Review: Came too soon. Rey Mysterio's WWE career wasn't even a year old, and his ECW career isn't even mentioned! Summary: 2 StarsRey Mysterio is an amazing athlete to behold. His ECW days are the stuff of legend, his feud with Psicosis so epic it spanned past ECW, starting even before then and producing some of the most memorable feats of athleticism in professional wrestling ever.
You get a sampling of this magic he makes in the ring with the bonus matches featured in extra in this DVD.
The documentary, meanwhile, barely covers much of importance. It seems to want to stick close to kayfabe, with Mysterio acting all pissed off at Albert for breaking his leg with a steel chair. We see Mysterio in the operating room, giving us a WWE version of "Cribs" by showing us his house and his son, getting a tattoo, and going down to Mexico to meet up with old friends and talk about his early days in Mexican wrestling and the AAA.
The documentary doesn't even mention ECW, so it just goes from Rey's childhood, with interviews from his parents in spanish, then tells of his AAA tenure, then suddenly jerking ahead to WCW and covering pretty much just his feud with Dean Malenko and his first match with the late Eddie Guerrero. Then it jerks ahead to 2001 where WCW closes down, and Rey is left to wrestle in independent promotions until 2002 when he comes into WWE.
The WWE part of the documentary only covers his feud with Kurt Angle, his tag team with Edge, and a few others, including the incident with Albert breaking his leg.
We never see his face either, as it must be some undeclared Lucadore code or tradition to never reveal your face to your fans or something, so the camera is either below his shoulders, avoiding his face, or when his face can't be avoided, is blurred out.
All in all, this DVD feels very incomplete, and while Mysterio wasn't in ECW as long as in WCW, it's probably the most important step in his career leading up to WWE. I hope the new one coming out this year has a more complete story.
DVD Review: Buy It For The Matches, Not The Documentry Summary: 3 StarsI happened to get this DVD as an extra when I bought my WrestleMania 22 set at Wal-Mart. This was similar to alot of the WWE DVD's that came out during that time (ala "Hulk Still Rules" & "nWo: Back In Black") where the extras heavily made up for the lackluster documentry. This documentry was done with a mix of reality & "storyline" which actually hurt it greatly. Throughout various parts, they kept putting over A-Train for injuring Mysterio during a SmackDown match in Dec. of '02 when reality is that Mysterio needed minor knee surgery & was out for a month yet they put it over as it was a major injury like Austin's neck or Triple H's quad. Also, they completely ignore the fact that fans who watched WCW after 1999 have seen Mysterio without his mask yet WWE chose to re-write history and completely ignore it to the point where all parts where his face is slightly shown, it's blurred out. WWE didn't obtain the ECW footage yet so that time period was completely ignored as well.
The documentry itself covers his time growing up & training to become a wrestler including a visit to his old school training ground in Tajuana. His time in WCW is glossed over including his fued with Dean Malenko & the fued with Eddie Guerrero leading up to their classic at Halloween Havoc '97. The prestige of his mask is also talked upon before getting into his debut in WWE. The stories around his matches with Kurt Angle at SummerSlam '02 and his tag team partnership with Edge leading up to his WrestleMania 19 match with Matt Hardy close out the documentry itself. You also get a "MTV Cribs" view of Mysterio's house along with him getting a new tattoo out in San Diego are also shown.
Again, the DVD extras heavily made up for the DVD with his high profile matches. As a side note, the WCW matches are shown from opening bell to closing bell so you don't see the entrances or the celebrations afterwards due to them not having the rights to the WCW music. Two matches against Dean Malenko (Great American Bash '96) including his first Crusierweight Title win (Monday Nitro in July '96), his 6 man tag match from the AAA promotion in Mexico (When World's Collide '94), Psychosis (Bash At The Beach '96), his classic with Eddie Guerrero (Halloween Havoc '97), Chris Jericho (Bash At The Beach '98), and four matches from SmackDown in 2002 (Chavo, Angle, Jamie Noble, a triple threat with Angle & Benoit) round out the matches along with hidden promos promoting Mysterio's WWE debut & talking about his theme music.
Bottom line is that this DVD came out too quickly in Mysterio's WWE career and the documentry is just poorly done when you compare it to later WWE superstar releases such as Guerrero & Benoit. Get it for the extras, not the documentry.
DVD Review: After Rey Wins title make Mysterio Collection on DVD Summary: 5 StarsRey Mysterio 619 was a great DVD that told us a story on Mysterio's life, it wasn't one of those DVD's like the RVD DVD or Undertaker DVD where there are only matches, this was a story of his life, with a few matches for extras. Although WWE should wait until Mysterio wins the World or WWE title until they do, they should make a DVD that covers a huge collection of a bunch of Rey's great matches, not just the highlights. 619 failed to include any of his ECW career's greatest matches, and there were alot of good matches from his WCW days that they missed.

I'm not saying this should be the end of the disc. Right now Rey looks like he may actually win the World title pretty soon, because before Eddie became No 1 contender Teddy Long was gonna name Rey, so that may mean a World title match for Rey pretty soon. If Rey does win the title, they should add Rey's title win and 1 or 2 succesful title defenses to Disc 3 and make The ultyimate Mysterio Collection!!!
