DVD Reviews of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: Season 4, Vol. 1

DVD Review: Good from the perspective of a 13-year-old
Summary: 3 Stars

First off, I was 11 when the "Voyage" series began in '64 and 14 when it ended its four-year-run in '68. I didn't see most of the episodes initially because we could only pick up the local regional ABC affiliate when the weather was bad. Oh, the days of rabbit ears!

With that said, I was a fan of anything with Irwin Allen's name on it; thus, I was big on "Lost in Space", "The Time Tunnel", and "Land of the Giants". Now, with the advent of DVD compilations, I can now travel down memory lane with these reissues of the classic shows of the period. Having purchased "Voyages" first three seasons, I didn't hesitate to add this latest release to my collection. However, I'll have to admit that the show had some glaring plot inconsistencies, inane dialog, fight scenes filmed at a distance to "hide" the stunt actors' faces, half-baked resolutions, cheesy costumes, and I'm-just-doing-this-for-the-paycheck-acting from Richard Basehart, a very good actor saddled with a show that didn't really showcase his immense talent.

In watching the first half of season 4, one begins to see the show like an old Road Runner cartoon with the various villains that pop-up being like Wile E. Coyote and the Seaview's crew more like the little speedy bird alluding capture. Occasionally, guest stars like Vincent Price ("The Deadly Dolls"), Victor Jory ("Fires of Death"), and Henry Jones ("Time to Die") bring a little spark to the frequently "water-logged" show, but those episodes are few and far between. Too many of the remaining ten featured in this half are retreads of earlier season one and two (superior years) installments.

But there are some pluses, including the continued fascinating model work of both The Seaview and The Flying Sub. I just wished the producers and writers had spent more time and effort on more believable stories that would've made this show live up to its potential. Another "bonus" is allowing the viewer to "play all" on one side should've been a feature on previous releases.

On the negative side again, Fox really scrimps on the release, "resurrecting" the pilot episode for a THIRD time, having no real extras, and not even using the fourth season's revamped intro on all episodes in this collection.

However, though I was disappointed with this first half, I still anticipate the final compilation for it contains one of my favorite installments, "Man-Beast".

As soon as it's on sale, I will be buying it.

DVD Review: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea -Seasin 4 Volume 1
Summary: 4 Stars

Just great. I remember these episodes from my junior high school/middle school years.I had a major crush on "Captain Crane".I anxiously await volume 2.

DVD Review: GREAT TV SHOW ! POOR PACKAGING
Summary: 4 Stars

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: Season 4, Vol. 1 is a great lalf season with many different story locations !

Episodes are at bottom of the sea, continent, island, even space and another time levels ! Many science-fiction point of views are concerned. But as the storie topics are going "thinner", there is more explosions, more monsters, more dramatic musical background.

We are quite far from the first black & white season (which is the best one of all seasons I believe).

But I was pleased to watch these episodes, and also the "new" opening of Voyage to the bottom of the sea during the fourth seaon. I remembered it very well and I was happy to see it again.

My only regret is the packaging, very fragile ! I received the DVD box set mostly broken ! So, be aware it is not the same packaging than previous seasons !

Rather than using thin, flexible and resistant DVD box for each DVD, Fox choose a standard DVD box which holds all DVDs ! Such solution is very fragile and can be broken during the delivery.

I do not understand why Fox did not use the same solution than previous seasons. The packaging is quite disagreable to use, mostly when it is broken because 2 DVDs are apart and floatting into the main DVD box.

That is the reason why I can not leave a 5 stars rating. Otherwise, the picture and sound quality are equal to previous seasons : in other words, close to perfection.

Edit : I received today a new box set which is more solid than the first one ordered last month. The design is close but the plastic more efficient and parts are stronger. Now, everything is okay !

DVD Review: More of the same, but...
Summary: 3 Stars

It's ironic how the budget for the VTTBOTS DVD's project was reduced at this fourth and last season. Ironic because it's just like what happened to the original series, back in the 60's when it was produced. Today, from the first to the third season on DVD, there were individual boxes for each disc and the whole thing was wrapped into another nice cardboard box. At this last season now, they put 3 discs in an only single plastic box and all the information about the episodes were printed in the back of the front cover. Really sad... And what about David Hedison's interwiews? It should be called "The One-Minute-Commentaries". Why not interview more actors of the series instead of putting a re-cut edition of the pilot episode? All we really have are the episodes themselves with quality. Forget about the rest, because there is none. Yes, it's more of the same, I know, but it could be much better.

DVD Review: Packaging
Summary: 2 Stars

Whats with the packaging change in volume 4 ? Couldn't fox keep it the same for the whole series. If this is some kind of ploy to get me to buy another set when they undoubtedly release the full set as a package then Fox are sadly mistaken. I'm currently repackaging this set myself for my own benefit, making my own covers and splitting these god awful double sided discs into single sided full printable discs with artwork on each disc. This is the last double sided disc set I will ever buy. In my opinion it's very poor and not at all user friendly. Too many corners have been cut and despite the extremely long wait for Volume 4 it doesn't appear that our beloved Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea has been in the hands of anyone at Fox that cares ! Just waiting now for the final episodes of volume 4 to be released to complete the collection which I'll have to buy. Then thats it Mr Fox. No More Sub standard Half Hearted Rubbish for me. Why couldn't the same amount of attention that was paid to Lost In Space have been paid to these releases? It's poor really !!!
