One of the most ghastly events of World War II is brought into the light with Sir Lew Grade's star-studded epic, VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED. The stunning, international cast is headed by such esteemed acting talents as Faye Dunaway, Lee Grant, Oskar Werner and Sam Wanamaker.
Just prior to the start of World War II, 937 Jewish citizens were curiously allowed to leave Germany and emigrate to Cuba. While many believed the offer to be a trap, most took their chances and decided to flee from the impending Holocaust. In reality, the voyage was nothing but a bizarre experiment in testing the world's attitude to anti-semitism, orchestrated by Josef Goebbels himself. Once the ship docks in Havana, all visas are cancelled and the passengers are forced to find somewhere else to go. When even the United States refuses to take them, there looks to be no other alternative than to return to Germany...
The "SS St. Louis" affair remains one of the most controversial subjects of WWII. Whilst the passengers were later saved (governments in Belgium, France, Holland and also England eventually agreed to accept immigrants at the 11th hour), hundreds later died in concentration camps anyway when the Nazi's invaded and occupied those territories. The blood of the St. Louis victims is on the hands of the entire world.
The escalating horror and dread onboard the ship is perfectly-pitched amongst the strong cast, with standouts including Faye Dunaway and Oskar Werner as Dr. and Denise Kreisler; Max von Sydow as the Captain; Lee Grant as Lillian Rosen (with Lynne Frederick as her daughter who plays out a bittersweet young shipboard romance with Malcolm McDowall); Dame Wendy Hiller as Recha Weiler; Julie Harris as Alice Feinchild and Helmut Griem as the menacing Otto. Katharine Ross won a Golden Globe Award for her work as a prostitute in Cuba trying to save her onboard parents. Lee Grant was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for her outstanding turn as Mrs Rosen.
Two different versions of this movie exist. The 155-minute theatrical cut, and a 182-minute two-part TV version (with several extended/alternate scenes). The version contained on this Lionsgate DVD is the shorter 155-minute theatrical presentation.
