DVD Review: Great idea; bad acting

The script for this dramatization of the book of Acts is simply the biblical text (New International Version), word for word. Chapter and verse numbers are displayed in the bottom corner of the screen, and the DVD menus allow you to skip easily to specific chapters or events. This is a great idea, but alas, the acting is mostly terrible. (Dean Jones is okay as Luke, and Francesco Quinn is good in his small role as Stephen.) Most strikingly, the actors were obviously instructed that the Christian disciples would be full of joy, which is fine, but this "joy" is portrayed with incessant cheerfulness and a lot of smiling and giggling.
I've used excerpts of this video in teaching college and high school religion courses--specifically, the sections on Pentecost and on Paul's conversion. I make sure to tell the students that it's okay if they giggle at the scene of Jesus' ascension, which is depicted quite literally. I'm shopping around for a new video to use in teaching Acts.
Incidentally, the movie "The Gospel of John," which is now being marketed as part of the "Visual Bible" series, has nothing else in common with the "Acts" video and is quite good.
