DVD Review: Not Worth the Price

This DVD is a re-recording from videotape of a 1991 recital given by Angel Romero in California. The transfer from tape to DVD is not particularly good; the image is slightly blurred and contains a few artifacts. It's apparent that no attempt was made to clean up the video. The audio is equally poor; it sounds as if some novice sound engineer equalized out the high-frequency harmonics of the sound -- which totally ruins the experience of listening to a classical guitar.
The recital itself is also quite short, consisting of the following pieces:
- Recuerdos de la Alhambra
- Burgalesa
- A pair of improvisations (totalling about six minutes)
- Leyenda
- Suite Andalusia (by Celadonia Romero)
Altogether, this totals less than a half hour of performance time. Mr. Romero delivers his usual technical perfection, although he seems to be "phoning in" his performance. There's really no life in the playing. Perhaps one can only play "Recuerdos" or "Leyenda" so many times before they become just finger exercises. (I'm reminded of a joke about a long-married couple who are in the throes of lovemaking; the wife is thinking to herself, "Blue! That's it; I should paint bedroom ceiling cornflower blue." Mr. Romero showed that same level of engagement during his performance.)
The cover of the DVD case claims there are "extras" on the disk: a biography and discography of Angel Romero. I was expecting maybe a video interveiw, or at least some photographs drawn from his career. Instead, the "biography" is nothing but a few screens of densely-packed text with a "Next" button at the bottom of each page. It looks like someone just cut his official bio from his resume and pasted the text into this DVD.
So is there anything good about this DVD? Well, maybe. Throughout the recital, the camera focuses tightly on Mr. Romero, so there's a consistently good view of both his right and left hands. If you're a classical guitarist, you might be able to pick up some technical tips from studying this DVD. Beyond that, it's really not worth the price.
