I am just in the process of ordering this movie, so I cannot comment on the content. However, I was disturbed by a review of this film that placed the murders in Ohio, not Iowa. The murders took place in Villisca,
Iowa, in 1912.
I've read enough reviews and seen enough footage to know that this should be an apparent fact to anyone seeing the film. I am giving this film high marks in the review, because I have been able to see several clips and have read quite a bit about the documentarians. I have high hopes.
DVD Review: An Unsolved Murder Mystery that rocked the Midwest
Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD documents the brutal Axe murders of an Ohio couple and their four children, as well as two other young girls who tragically had been visiting the night of the brutal attack.
Taking place in Midwest Ohio in 1912, the film chronicles the unrest created amoungst the town's residents who split right down the middle based on their economic status and even Church domininations as to who they believed committed this slaughter of innocent human beings.
The extra feature commentary by the Rundles who produced this film is excellent and offers a very down to earth study of dealing with a small community who to this day still has difficulty in dealing with this brutal and tragic crime.
For Crime buffs, as well as American Anthropoligists it well worth the viewing and excellently chronicled with interviews, photos, reinactments, and even criminal profiles by former FBI crime investigators.
Was this crime perpetrated by one of America's first serial murderers?
The answer the film offers is YES.......and his bloody story of murder across the Midwest during two years makes him a likely candidate.

When an entire family is wiped out by an axe-wielding killer on a June evening in 1912, a small Iowa town spirals into chaos and division. "Villisca: Living with a Mystery" tells the epic true story of the Villisca, Iowa Children's Day axe murders. Following just two months after the sinking of the Titanic, America's greatest unsolved mystery built and ruined political careers, created a lasting community split over the guilt or innocence of a local man--a state senator-- and produced dozens of litigations including three sensational trials. The documentary also explores the possibility that the Villisca crime, and similar axe murders in Monmouth, Illinois; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Ellsworth, Kansas, may have been the work of one of America's first serial killers.
