DVD Reviews of Underworld: Evolution (Fullscreen Edition)

DVD Review: Great Sequel
Summary: 4 Stars

Underworld- Evolution
If you are a fan of classic Werewolf and Vampire movies, you need to be open minded coming into this movie. Not all werewolves and vampires need to have the same characteristics. This is a great movie in its own right. The movie is an action flick, not a horror movie. I will say that watching the original Underworld would probably help you understand this movie more. They give you a good back story in the beginning, but I didn't feel like it was enough.

Selene is a Vampire that is being hunted down. In the previous movie she killed their Vampire lord, Victor. Victor had started the war with the werewolves, known as Lycans in this movie. Selene learned the truth and saved a man named Micheal from sure death. Micheal is the only hybrid of both Lycans and Vampires. Victor wanted no leaps like that and wanted to kill Micheal. Now, Victor has been killed and the search is on for his killer.

Selene must now awaken Markus, another vampire elder, to see the treason of Victor and help her. Markus, however, is already awaken. Blood of a Lycans dripped into his tomb and he is now a Hybrid himself. He is one of the most powerful beings in the world. Markus has his own agenda in finding his brother, William. William is the first werewolf, much like Markus is the original vampire. William was hidden away in a tomb somewhere that Markus could never find. William was out of control and killing everything.

Selene, as it turns out, is the only person who knows the location of the tomb. Her family helped build it when she was only a child. She can't remember it precisely, but if Markus drinks her blood he will learn all her secrets. Now, the hunt is on.

This sequel features a lot less gun fights. Instead it opts to use actually fighting sequences. While the are done well, I personally preferred the gun fights. Still, some of the fights are awesome. Markus and Micheal battling on the back of a moving truck is insane.

Markus is a great villain. He is powerful, but has good intentions. He wants to save his brother. Soon his intentions shift though. He wants to create a new race in his hybrid image. He is becoming mad with power. This evolution of character really works for me.

The actors are all top notch. There are some really good British actors that flesh out the dialogue very well. These actors really make the Underworld series what it is. Markus is played so well it is mad. Also, Tenus is plays his weasel character very well.

The extras on this DVD are pretty good. I didn't really like the commentary track. It was informative, but one of the guys speaking had an accent that was extremely hard to understand. There is a bunch of making of features and a awesome music video, Her Portrait in Black by Atreyu. Good extras for a normal release.

The gore in this movie is pretty good. You see blood squirting, heads smash off, and top jaws being ripped off. While that all sounds crazy, the gore never seems to over the top. You never question how realistic it looked. It all looks amazing.

One true problem I had with the movie is that my favorite character, Craven, is killed within in the beginning of the movie. Still, I won't take off points for that because the movie was good enough with out him. Still, I miss Craven.

If you are looking for a good action movie, check this one out. If you are looking for a repeat of the last werewolf/vampire movie you saw, go see something else. The acting is great and the extras are nice. Still, I preferred the first movie over this one.

Description of Underworld: Evolution (Fullscreen Edition)

THE SAGA CONTINUES AS THE BATTLE RAGES ON BETWEEN THE DEATH DEALERS (VAMPIRES) & THE LYCANS (WEREWOLVES) IN THIS FAST-PACED MODERN-DAY TALE OF DEADLY ACTION, RUTHLESS INTRIGUE & FORBIDDEN LOVE ALL LEADING TO THE BATTLE TO END ALL WARS AS THE IMMORTALS FINALLY FACE THEIR RETRIBUTION.
Better action, a bit of sex, and gorier R-rated violence make Underworld: Evolution a reasonably satisfying sequel to 2003's surprise hit Underworld. Looking stunning as ever in her black leather battle gear, Kate Beckinsale is every goth guy's fantasy as Selene, the vampire "death dealer" who's now fighting to stop the release of the original "Lycan" werewolf, William (Brian Steele) from the prison that's held him for centuries. As we learn from the film's action-packed prologue, William and his brother Marcus (Tony Curran) began the bloodline of vampires and werewolves, and after witnessing centuries of warfare between them, their immortal father Corvinus (Derek Jacobi) now seeks Selene and the human vampire/lycan hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman) to put an end to the war perpetuated by Victor (Bill Nighy), the vampire warrior whose betrayal of Selene turns Underworld: Evolution into an epic tale of familial revenge. This ambitious attempt at Shakespearean horror is compromised by a script (by Danny McBride and returning director Len Wiseman, Beckinsale's real-life husband) that's more confusing than it needs to be, with too many characters and not enough storytelling detail to flesh them all out. Aspiring to greatness and falling well short of that goal, Underworld: Evolution succeeds instead as a full-throttle action/horror thriller, with enough swordplay, gunplay, and CGI monsters to justify the continuation of the Underworld franchise. If you're an established fan, this is a must-see movie; if not, well... at least it's better than Van Helsing! --Jeff Shannon
