DVD Reviews of Ultimate Avengers 2 (Rise of the Panther)DVD Review: This One Sucked Almost As Bad As The First One Summary: 2 Stars
I've gotta be one of the biggest "Ultimates" fans out there so when I heard they were making a movie i was super excited. Well, for those of you who haven't scene the first movie, to be frank, IT SUCKED. Now comes "Utimate Avengers 2". I decided to give the film makers the benefit of the doubt & give part 2 a chance. I'm sorry to say there's only more of the same. One good thing about this movie is that they decide to throw a couple parts of the "Ultimates 1" book in regarding the Wasp/Giant Man issue. We also get to see a little more of the isolated Bruce Banner/Hulk. These issues, while kinda cool that they decided to include them, are not done properly & are lacking the drama you got when reading the book. Another issue I had with this movie was... "BLACK PANTHER"!!!
While I understand that this was mearly a marketing ploy & bad attempt at being politically correct, there was absolutely no reason for him to be in the movie. While yes the story does take place in Wakanda, it could've just as easily taken place in New York or some where else in the States. Why not build up Nick Fury more? Nick's got a little more action in the end of this one, but still could be used alot more. They also could've just as easily used "The Falcon" another character that's already been introduced the book. We don't need you to be introducing new characters if you're not going to give the proper respect to the book & do it right. Not that I even have anything against "Black Panther" but they haven't even introduced the entire team from the actual book & I see no need to introduce other characters other than to make another half azzed spin off movie. And one more thing about "Black Panther", if you're really trying to be PC with this movie & you're saying this is the "Black Panther" of the Ultimate Universe; why not drop the "Black" from the name? Why couldn't he be just as easily be known as "The Panther"? We all know panthers are black right, & we all also know that he's an African American(well I guess technically he's not even American, just African then)character right, so why not drop that from the name? The sixties are over guys, if you really wanna be PC, get with the program.
Back to the movie, the animation in the movie hasn't improved any either. We're still stuck with the same sloppy stuff from the first one, nothing was improved at all. However, reading interviews from the animators "This is state of the art 3D animation". Whatever dude, call it what you want, it'd be nice though if you could at least keep the correct perspectives of the various characters on screen. All the same cast members are back & there weren't really any problems there. The whole movie is still very kid friendly & unfortunately you probably wouldn't be able to tell it apart from most Saturday morning cartoons
About the best things to come out of this DVD are the special features. There a 2 previews of upcoming animated features "Iron Man" & "Dr. Strange". the animation in these 2 look much better than "Ultimates 1 & 2". Iron Man looked a little better, but Dr Strange didn't look to bad either. The main course though is the interviews with Mark Millar & Bryan Hitch. For anyone that hasn't read "The Ultimates" books this interview will clue you in to not only what you're missing, but also what the book and characters are really all about. The best bit is when they talk about the "A" on Captain America's forehead, CLASSIC!!! I also felt kinda embarassed for the 2 of them. Watching the interview you could tell they hadn't scene the 1st movie yet & probably didn't know just how badly they'd butchered the stories & characters. You could just see how honored they were for a movie to have been made about one of their projects & now knowing what we know now, it just feels kinda crappy that marvel sold out the way they did.
I know most of you will probably rush out and by this just because it is what it is. Out of respect for the true creators of this franchise though, I think you should all sit back & ignore this release. We should all just sit back & pretend these movies never happened. If we stop buying their garbage, they'll have to stop making garbage. If they're not gonna give the propety the proper respect they deserve, why even bother?
In short, you probably wanna rent this one before you buy. The story feels kinda familiar, but still manages to crap all over what the book is actually all about. That might be okay for some of you, but to me that's an insult to not only the fans, but the creators as well.
