DVD Reviews of U2 - Zoo TV Live from Sydney (Limited Edition)

DVD Review: Best U2 DVD!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This along with the Pop DVD are definetly the best DVD of U2. So much energy, so much fun, I found myself smiling at every performance. All the MacPhisto stuff is a bit odd at first but it never takes away from the performance. Bono sounds amazing here, and looks great, Edge, Larry and Adam sound as perfect as ever. This is a must buy for any fan, fanatic or new.

DVD Review: Must have for all U2 fans!
Summary: 4 Stars

I remember the first time I saw this concert footage (on VHS) and thinking that surely it must rate as one of the greatest live shows ever - right up there with Peter Gabriel's "Secret World Live" (among many others). So I was very pleased when the U2 camp finally decided to release this monumental event on DVD.

And this DVD is great! But it could be better.

The main problem is the audio - Bono's vocals in particular. His vocals are too quiet in the overall mix. I had read that in another review before purchasing, and it's true. But that's my only complaint and the reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5.

This DVD captures a very special moment in time for one of the best rock bands in the world. They finally had the clout and the resources to put on a show like never before - a visual music experience that they had always dreamed of doing.

And if you like U2, you will love Zoo TV.

DVD Review: Really good, but not great
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a cool document of the ZooTV Tour, the music's very good, and it's U2 - so 4 stars. Some highlights are the transition from "Running to Stand Still" into "Streets Have No Name", "Lemon", and Bono's clownish Devil. But, this DVD doesn't completely measure up. First off, it's shot for television (possibly a continuing irony of the Zoo TV statement, but not effectively capturing the feel of the show) and seems to be on high-end video, not film. Second, their performance, while it's U2, it's great; it's at a point where there was a lot more flash than substance. The show is big spectacle and Bono's performance in particular is full of bravado, but it seems to overshadow the songs. When the rock "show" takes precedence to the rock "songs" you lose something in translation. Also, the Limited Edition second disc, as is becoming more and more typical, doesn't bring too much to the party. I'm always a fan of seeing more songs, different camera angles, possibly even a straight audio-only show (like the Foo Fighters did and it's cool to have a whole second show just because...), but this second disc, frankly was no big deal. More for novelty sake, I guess. Overall, this is better for fans and completionists or those of you who witnessed that actual tour, but if you're going to get a live U2 DVD I'd highly recommend Slane Castle (lots of energy in front of some 40K people) or Live in Chicago 2005. Amazingly enough, and something I highly respect about this band, U2 seems to have gotten better with some age - they seem to be really enjoying themselves in these later performances where they dispense with most of the operatic theatrics and scale down to a straight up rock performance with cool lights.

DVD Review: collection piece
Summary: 5 Stars

A great collection piece. Really, the last concert in U2 is original.
the Bono's voice is in fullness, music sounds excellent and perfomance is the best one of the band in last the 25 years.

The DVD-2 has some songs that aren't in the original version of concert in the 90's. Good colletion material.

DVD Review: Bad video, average sound
Summary: 2 Stars

The concert itself is one of the best ever. But we have to wait years to have this DVD edition, so I expected much more about the sound (average, too bassy) and specially the video (very bad, seems like a bad VHS. And 4:3 aspect ratio).

Zoo TV represents U2 at their most ambitious. The multimedia event combines two stages with live music, pre-recorded tracks, and 36 screens flashing an array of words and images. (Video artists include Kevin Godley, Anton Corbijn, and Brian Eno.) The theatricality extends to the quartet themselves, since Bono, as "The Fly," enters the scene in black patent leather--shades of '68 Elvis--while Adam Clayton sports a platinum mohawk. In order to recreate the experience for the home viewer, slogans are superimposed over footage from this 1993 engagement, e.g. "question everything," "this is not a rehearsal," etc. As Bono quips, "The latest and greatest in software, hardware, and menswear--we've got it all here." With so much going on, the most dynamic material tends to work best, like "The Real Thing," "Bullet the Blue Sky," and "Mysterious Ways," complete with belly dancer (in keeping with the song's Moroccan-set video). The foursome also tackles a few covers, like Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love" and Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love." Towards the end of the latter, Reed appears via video monitor to sing along. Arguably, the whole Mister MacPhisto thing--Bono as satanic lounge lizard---doesn't quite work, but U2 deserves props for taking chances when most bands in their position would be resting on their laurels. With the accent on material from Achtung Baby and Zooropa,Zoo TV: Live From Sydney first appeared on VHS in 1994 and garnered a Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
