DVD Reviews of Two Brothers (Widescreen Edition)

DVD Review: A wonderful documentary of human cruelty and apathy
Summary: 5 Stars

When most people think about tigers they tend to associate the great cat with brutal (often exaggerated) attacks against humans. What most people don't hear, when they hear about the attacks, is what the human victim did to the tiger to begin with. Considering that there are less than 5,000 tigers in the wild, and only a few hundred in captivity many experts predict that unless action is taken now the great cat could be extinct within our lifetime, as soon as five or six years. These animals are killed at a rate of 500 every year, and most cubs don't survive long enough to replenish the population. This is the plight of the tiger. Their greatest enemy is human apathy, and ignorance. You see many tigers attack because they are attacked, mishandled, abused, poorly fed, or otherwise startled or frightened. This is especially true of tigers in captivity where most of the more recent incidents occur.
As a child I hated the circus. I hated seeing how the trainers treated the tigers, and it got to a point where I got so tired of seeing the great cats treated so badly that I have been on a 18 year long boycott of the circuses. I know some say the situation has improved, but history has shown us, as did this movie, that cats that are made to perform tend to have poor living conditions, as well as trainers that beat them senseless and are then surprised when the animal attacks them. I am really grateful for Two Brothers because its nice to know that there is FINALLY someone out there who has figured out what should have been obvious from the beginning. The tiger is not a savage killer. Like a dog, if you abuse it, startle it, or otherwise make it feel threatened it will attack, and quite frankly, it has every right to. Your house cat does the same thing, but its so small it can't hurt you. The trials that Kumal has to go through had me feeling a range of emotions, from sorrow, to anger, to hopelessness. The Tigers were so great in this movie you could almost hear them talk. They communicated their emotions so well that it more than compensates for anything lacking in their human counterparts (a critique some critics have made that I disagree with. The actors did fine). Kumal is put to all kinds of abuse and torture at the hands of his circus owners, Sungah starts off with a bit of a break, getting what seems like a decent home with a little boy named Roul who adores him, but once again, human ignorance and apathy intervenes when the young cub is forced to defend himself against an aggressive dog. Please note... throughout the movie both tigers have ample opportunity to kill, and while in self-defense they do cause injury, everyone they attack in defense survives. Most Tiger victims survive in real life. I felt this movie did a brilliant job of conveying that if they were savage killers, as so often portrayed they would have killed, they can kill, but they didn't. It is mentioned that even the dog survives. It makes me very angry that people can be so aggressive and abusive toward wild animals, and then are genuinely surprised when the animals attack. Like that Crocodile Hunter guy... one day some wild animal will bite his head off, and he'll have it coming! But the media will be all over the animal that was merely defending itself, and most likely the animal itself will be hunted down and killed. Humanity should reexamine its handling of wild animals. Experiments have shown that tigers respond very well to love and human care. A successful experiment would be Tiger Island (showcased on Animal Planet) where the trainers live, eat, and play with the tigers, and not once have there been any attacks. They care for the tigers like they would their own children and the pay off is incredible. The tigers are even taken out in public where they interact effortlessly with strange humans who are able to pet and play with the tigers without incident. I would advice not only seeing Two Brothers for a better understanding of the Tiger, but also doing research on them. You'll find that they can be just like an oversized housecat if they're treated right. So before you judge the tiger see this movie, and understand that it is the human who is to blame, not the tiger. (Please note that I do not believe that Tigers are a good pet, as 99% of everyone out there does not have the resources neccissary to properly care for a tiger.)
