DVD Review: A wonderful show, so far...
Summary: 5 Stars
Shiki, a High School student, is born with Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, enabling him to destroy just about anything he wants. However, when he is but a young boy he is given special glasses that make the red lines he has always seen disappear, and with those he is finally able to live a normal life. That is all taken away from him, though, when Shiki gets a sudden, uncontrollable urge to kill a woman passing him by with a knife he can't seem to leave home without. Frightening, unexplainable things like this keep happening to him, but then he passes out and somehow awakens in his bed. He's thus surprised to discover that the woman he severed is still alive and is actually a fanged creature of the night! And to make matters worse, she's a princess of the true ancestors and wants him to protect her from the evil's of the world that wish to destroy her...
"Tsukihime, Lunar Legend" seems to have revived my interest in Japanese animation. Its been awhile since an anime has sucked me in so deeply, I'm fascinated by what is going to happen next, and this early on in the show. I haven't watched the entire series yet but I'm completely intrigued with the evolving storyline seen in 'Vol. 1 - Life Threads', which is why I feel the need to briefly share my thoughts on the four episodes included here.
There's just so much crap being praised right now simply because it is full of gore and bloody action! "Lunar Legend" has those things, yes, but there's a subtle build to the suspense and violence that is tastefully done, and with mysterious character introductions as well as developments that unfold at an even pace, and with beautiful animation.
It's mainly the connection and reference to the moon and vampires that first caught my attention but I can already tell that this is going to be a favorite amongst fans of atmospheric horror and dark fantasy-like anime.
