DVD Reviews of True Blood: The Complete Second Season

DVD Review: Luckily some redeeming qualities - HBO you are not filming a B grade drive in movie here! Get with it!
Summary: 4 Stars

I loved Season 1. Season 2 just gets an "I liked it" and that is a bit generous. It would be more accurate to say I liked parts of it.

I have read and loved the books. I do not expect a series based on the books to be exactly the same. I'm good if it is inspired by or similar to - no need for a carbon copy. After all I've read the books and already imagined that. I fell in love with the characters so if you go somewhere else for the TV version that's cool with me. That said what were they thinking with this season? It seemed aimless - as if the writers could not figure out what they really wanted to do so they just did a "little bit" of a bunch of things - leaving too much focus on inconsequential people and things and not enough where it really needed it to continue maturing story lines and characters and providing more depth. If it was a book the plot would be paper thin.

Keep in mind my review is just that. Mine. I do not watch much TV (mostly because much of what is on nowadays is just so pitiful I cannot be bothered to waste moments of my life exploring it)

Here is what I thought they did well:

1. Godric's storyline - Great. Wonderful actor, well portrayed, did what good TV is supposed to do - gave us more insight into Eric and a depth of emotion we had not previously seen. Contrasted the complications that coming "out" brought to the vampires and what can happen internally when you exist so long that life loses all meaning whatsoever. Masterful. Poignant and enriching.

2. Fellowship of the Sun storyline - I thought this was very good. A little too dramatic and one dimensional but it is TV.

3. Andy's storyline - to some degree was well done. It gave you a real sense of his issues (he's prominent in the books) and the interactions between him and the Sheriff are priceless.

4. Hoyt's storyline - I really liked Hoyt's storyline. The issues with his mom and Jessica. A great new spin on meet the mom. Jessica and Hoyt's romance is well played - with just enough tension to keep you interested but as they are both relatively innocent (in some ways) it comes off as a first love bringing back all those nostalgic moments. I found myself smiling when they were on screen. Actors have good chemistry as well.

5. Bill and Lenore - they had more chemistry than Bill and Sookie..although it was a overacted in many places it still allowed you to see a bit of Bill's past. Give you a sense of who he was and is and why.

6. Barry - Superb. SO wish it had been more explored. GREAT part of the storyline..I mean in the 1st season so much is about Sookie and what she can do and how different she is (more than human)..why could we not go further?

What they did not do well

1. Bill and Sookie - first I have never warmed up to either of these actors. I don't know why but there are times I almost cringe when they are on screen. They have chemistry but it's just not strong enough to carry the show. Apparently the writers think this too as they've added so many more storylines this year - really there would be no need if this lead couple could take the lead. I'm not speaking here about the fact the books are written only from Sookie's viewpoint - of course that would be too limiting for a TV show. And I get the Soap opera qualities - and the shift between stories all the time. Unfortunately some of the best moments of the show are not between Bill and Sookie. They are between Eric and Sookie, Godric and Eric, Hoyt and Jessica, etc.

2. Vampire Queen - Oh my. Not even sure where to start? Somebody got Gossip Girl in my True Blood. Lame. Very very lame. Please do not continue to torture your viewers like this HBO. I like the actress just fine but in this it just makes a mockery out of a cool character and storyline. Way too campy.

3. Sam's storyline with Daphne - which seems excellent at first and degenerates into yet more lame-ness. Sam finally redeems himself in the end but through much of the season he comes off as weak and scared and pitiful. He deserves better as a character. Good actor as well.

4. Tara and Eggs - First Eggs is HOT. I mean that with a capital H. Whoa momma. Man is fine. The scenes with Tara and him were scorching. But when they started that weird orgy stuff - ish. Just yuck. I had hoped he would stick around for another season - there were a lot of places to go with his character. Somehow though those two on screen just never equalled the times it was Sookie and Eric or one of the other couples. Tara this year was also extremely irritating - please change this for season 3.

And, finally, the epic failure of the Maryann storyline. Where do you even start with this? Dear God if I wanted to see a bunch of middle age folks having an orgy I'd, well, I wouldn't but if I did I'd just buy the DVD or hit the adult store. SO unappealing. I actually made my lemon face and fast forwarded during these parts. Seriously how hard is it to just get a bunch of actors (no special talent needed), strip them, and have them look like they are having sex? Is that what I pay for? The whole thing was like a bad B movie that I caught at a drive-in 20 years ago necking with my boyfriend. And we paid $1 each to get in.

What do I want to see:

1. More politics and interactions with the VAMPIRES. The show is about VAMPIRES. Not weird ancient creatures who turn into Bulls and make people into Zombies. The Vampire Queen, Sheriff's, conflicts within the vampire community - how humans interact now that vampires are "out". The core of what the show is about.

2. More storyline with Eric and his crew - they have a lot of charisma and some of the best moments are when they are on screen. We need more. Much more. If you have to have tons of sex scenes let's see more Eric! He's mysterious and multi dimensional. And he's cuter than Bill by far. Plus Pam is funny - hopefully we'll see more of her in Season 3.

3. More about Sookie and the vampires. Her interactions with them, the danger she gets into, why she is drawn to them, more exploration. I gotta be honest and say I'm not a fan of the actress herself much..but I'd rather have her than the whole Maryann crud.

What I hope:

That this sophmore slump (slide, downturn, crash, plummet, etc) of this season makes way for a Season 3 that is heavy on the good parts (politics, humans and vampire conflict, character growth and depth, storyline expansion, MUCH more vampire backstory, a little more higher end intelligence and snark and way less campy B grade movie junk).

It gets 4 stars because of the good things. Godric and Eric's storyline elevates it a complete 2 stars (from 2 to 4 stars by the way). I cried when Godric met the sun. However, I almost took a star back on account of the severe lameness of the Vampire Queen but I decided to be forgiving.

True Blood's second season, with episodes involving a new cast of monsters invading Louisiana swamp town Bon Temps, is notably gorier and more camp than the first season. While thematically the central focus in these 12 exciting episodes still revolves around faith and loyalty, these questions are complicated by displays of pagan ritual and obsession. Though the vampire/human relationship dilemma continues, spearheaded by lovers Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), there is less emphasis on addiction to V, or vampire blood, and more time dedicated to outsiders whose supernatural talents make some episodes feel like superhero battles.

Episode 1, "Nothing but the Blood," sets the gory example with a brutal opening scene in which the local shaman has been eviscerated. While gruesome murders continue throughout the season, we become familiar with a new femme fatale, Maryann Forrester (Michelle Forbes), who hosts bacchanalia, such as the one in episode 4 ("Shake and Fingerpop") that gives Bon Temps a collective hangover. Also developing in this season are relationships between Sookie and Bill's vampire colleagues Eric (Alexander Skarsgård), Eric's master Godric, and a vampire queen who plays Yahtzee throughout episode 11 ("Frenzy"). The ever-increasing vampire interest in Sookie leads to her questioning her own supernatural psychic identity, especially in the final episode ("Beyond Here Lies Nothin'"), a semi-ridiculous, over-the-top segment that is more humorous than scary. Also corny but funny are the episodes featuring Fellowship of the Sun zealots Steve and Sarah Newlin (Michael McMillian and Anna Camp), and Jason Stackhouse's evangelical dedication to them (with Ryan Kwanten as Stackhouse). Perhaps the best episodes are those dedicated to the endangered plights of Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell), Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), and Tara (Rutina Wesley). New characters, like Tara's lover, Eggs (Mehcad Brooks), and the young, tempestuous vampire Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll), also add greatly to an already fabulous cast. Though the extras in this DVD set, "The Vampire Report (Special Edition)" and "Fellowship of the Sun: Reflections of Light," offer lighthearted, pseudo-documentary fun, they feel quaint next to the many wonderful episodes of this horror serial. --Trinie Dalton
