DVD Reviews of TransamericaDVD Review: make me feel sorry for these folks Summary: 2 StarsThere is a certain decadence in American life that movies like this
are ample evidence of. In a previous generation this fellow would have
been locked up as being too strange for the normal population?
Sorry, sorry, sad, sad and maybe even criminal, but mostly very
strangely twisted, this movie shouldn't shown to children?
DVD Review: Great performance by Huffman Summary: 3 StarsThis is one of those movies that makes you wonder why it even got made. It's really a far-fetched little tale, but Felicity Huffman does a bang-up job in the lead role, and you get to see a lot of pretty scenery along the way as Bree and Toby traverse the USA. The critics generally liked it because it's "different," but that's not always a good thing. I'm glad I didn't spend the time and money to see it in a theater, but as a Friday Night renter on DVD, it held my interest.
DVD Review: FANTASTIC MOVIE! Summary: 5 StarsFANTASTIC MOVIE!
I was glued to the screen watching this movie - Felicity Huffmans performance was BRILLANT! Though the films encompassing storyline was a bit bizarre for the conservative majority, as I watched this film that strangeness took a back seat and I soon found I was empathizing with the lead character and getting caught up in the journey. This movie wasn't about anything perverse, it was about moral dignity, love and compassion and I truly recommend this film to anyone. It will have you laughing out loud, tug on your heartstrings and will open your eyes to self-realization and what truly matters in life. Prejudices have no Meaning; when watching this movie you will discover that people are ALL the same regardless of looks, we all experience the same emotions and ALL have the same longings for LOVE and ACCEPTANCE!
DVD Review: Seen this film yet...? Summary: 5 StarsThis is my FAVORITE movie...
Why, you ask? Maybe because my friend, Sandi Alexander has a featured role in it, OK? And she is SO good...!
DVD Review: Predictable or Predictably excellent? Summary: 4 StarsNot knowing much of Felicity Hoffman's work other than Desperate Housewives I was drawn to this movie due to its status as art film/low budget etc... and I was amazed to discover wonderful acting performances from particularly her but also from the other key characters.
The storyline was anything but common, a woman trapped in a mans body dying for a sexchange operation suddenly realising she might be the father of a dysfunctional teenage son! What followed however was rather predictable, the two thrown together in a car driving across America, bonding and gradually developing a closer relationship.
Despite the predictable outcome what was less predictable was how drawn into the improbable story we as viewers get and how we fast get to grips the almost absurd situations that emerge - we gain empathy with all the characters even though non can claim not to flawed...
A great little movie - a nice surprise - and A HURRAH for independent film making which will never be able to steal the limelight from the big Hollywood productions but which often make for far better viewing.
Description of TransamericaFelicity Huffman deserves every award she's received for her outstanding performance in Transamerica, a small but rich movie about Bree--formerly Stanley--a pre-operative male-to-female transexual awaiting gender-reassignment surgery who learns she has a wayward teenage son named Toby. When her therapist (Elizabeth Pe?a, Jacob's Ladder) strongarms Bree into facing her past, she bails Toby (Kevin Zegers, Dawn of the Dead) out of jail and they end up on a road trip across the country. Such a premise could feel forced, but the script and performances make it persuasive and natural. Bree wrestles with discomfort and compassion as she learns about Toby's own troubles, even while her own grow worse when she's forced to ask for help from her hostile parents (the superb Fionnula Flanagan, The Others, and Burt Young, Rocky). Transamerica doesn't push for any great catharsis, but instead slowly peels away the layers of Bree's defenses, laying bare her basic struggle for respect and a chance at happiness. In many ways it's a showy role, but Huffman (Desperate Housewives) keeps her acting simple, direct, and thoroughly compelling. --Bret Fetzer
