DVD Review: Invaluable Learning Tool

As a performance DVD this kinda falls short; it's 3 guys in a hotel room in the wee hours of the morning and the sound/video quality is straight-up awful. The menus remove any doubt that this was completely a homemade effort courtesy of some random "My First DVD" software. Open-air audio recording from a circa 1988 camcorder leaves behind grainy audio complete with incessant high-pitched background whine. That being said, this is still a remarkable tool for musicians like I who worship the man and love to play his songs. It constantly alternates between two camera angles, one just a close-up of his face, but the other provides an excellent view of his hands so you can see how he actually played them, where he places his capo, etc. Several dozen re-watchings with guitar in hand will provide you with a completely authentic blueprint for how to mimic some of the greatest songs ever written. It also has a handful of cover performances on the DVD, and Calvin Russell's version of "Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold" is not to be missed! Overall, worth the price but should be approached more as an instructional video than a concert DVD. DVD Review: Townes was the Best!

I had the great fortune of meeting and performing with Townes as my band was the house band at the Lone Star Cafe in NY in the late 80's. We got to open for him on two different occasions and spent two 4 day weekends hanging out in the dressing room and talking about life, song writing, performing, and many other related and unrelated topics. When Townes played, you could hear a pin drop! Over the years I grew to appreciate his writing even more. I think he is perhaps the best American folk song writer...certainly up there with Dylan and Stephen Foster. This DVD provides a wonderful in depth look at Townes the person. It also has some wonderful snippets of performances of many of Townes' songs. As soon as I heard about this video I ordered it, pre release date. It more than met my expectations! Townes was a creative genious and somewhat of mysterious man. I was fascinated to learn more about him through this DVD. We lost a special artist when we lost Townes. Anyone familiar with him and his songs will love this video as well as find it of interest. I think even if you are not familiar with his songs, seeing this DVD may very well whet your appetite and get you headed to the local CD store to acquire his recordings. I strongly recommend this video - you just can't go wrong here. Thanks to the folks that took the time to put this together. DVD Review: For the guitar players & die hards only

Being a TVZ fan and hack guitar player, I thought this would be perfect for me. On the latter front, it is interesting to see his finger positions as was pointed out by another reviewer, but as a TVZ fan this is disappointing. It is just Townes on a couch with a couple cameras which in and of itself would be fine except the sound is kind of funky. I know "funky" is not much of a description but it definitely is not a DVD I would crank thru the stereo. I like TVZ alot, but I would suggest the Heartworn Highways (which I have) or one of the items on his official website (which I don't have) before this item.

True this DVD is a rare chance to see Townes playing live. Apart from the DVD "Townes live in Amsterdam", you can order it via Townes' official website, there is, by my know, no other visual document released. Townes plays a set in a hotel room in Houstan. He plays a well chosen setlist with a few gems, Nothing, I'll be here in the morning, Pancho&Lefty. Also interesting is the addition of Barb Donovan, playing "Come Tomorrow" and Calvin Russel playing "Mister Mud and Mister Gold". So far with the good things, a big letdown is in my opinion the quality of the footage of Townes, both in sound and picture. The picture is blurry and somewhat colourless and the sound is distracted by minor hiss.
Townes seems also a bit tired and being in a sad mood (When compared to "Hartworn Highways"). If you are a fan you're not disapointed but if you are a Townes "first timer" by "Heartworn Highways" instead.

I started to watch/listen while folding laundry. At the end of the 70 minutes, there were 2 shirts in my folded pile and a full basket of laundry still needing attention.
