DVD Reviews of Tombstone

DVD Review: Good movie and great price
Summary: 5 Stars

My son has been wanting this movie to add to his collection. We could not figure out why it was so expensive everywhere.I found it here for such an affordable price. It is a classic movie.

DVD Review: Pale horse, pale rider
Summary: 4 Stars

This same movie has been made and remade so often that there is a "traditional version" , an "historical version " and a "romantic version".
In this version the US marshal Wyatt Earp hunts down the red sash cowboys after they kill his brother by shooting him in the back in a pool hall.
This takes place well after the famous shoot out at the O. K. Corral.
In the traditional version his brother is shot before the O.K. Corral.
In most versions we never see what happens to Doc Holliday or hear about how Wyatt lives to a ripe old age in California.
So this version my well be closer to the actual historical events than most of these movies.

DVD Review: This is the Real Thing
Summary: 5 Stars

Few fans of "Tombstone" may realize how close to reality this modern classic is. Much of the success belongs to the original screenwriter and director Kevin Jarre. The screenplay by Jarre was really fabulous and I only wish we could have seen the alternative version to be able to compare with what became the final version. There remains an untold story about why he was removed as the director and replaced by a journeyman director who never before or since created anything memorable.

All that said this is a great piece of entertainment realized by a wonderful cast lead by Russell, Kilmer and an all-star supporting cast. Enjoy it once, twice or many times as you'll always find something new to make it an exciting experience.

DVD Review: Tombstone/Kurt Russell-Val Kilmer
Summary: 5 Stars

I originally purchased this movie for my vhs player which I no longer have, so I had to replace with dvd. I think this movie is excellent. The actors all play thier roles well and make it believable. I like this version much better than any version I have seen and Val Kilmer steals the movie as Doc Holiday. This is a must see!

Description of Tombstone

A sizzling, star-studded cast brings to life the legendary battle to deliver justice to TOMBSTONE! Kurt Russell (MIRACLE, VANILLA SKY) turns in a gripping performance as U.S. Marshall Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer (THE MISSING, BATMAN FOREVER) ignites the screen as the outrageous Doc Holliday. Together, they team up to bring law to the lawless in a notorious showdown with the ruthless outlaws at the O.K. Corral! The all-star ensemble also includes Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Dana Delany, Jason Priestley, Michael Biehn, and long-time Hollywood favorite Charlton Heston. Get ready for an explosive, action-packed adventure the Wild West would never forget!
This Western has become a modest cult favorite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P. Cosmatos, who has yet to make a better film than this. --Jeff Shannon
