DVD Reviews of Till the Clouds Roll By (Remastered Edition)DVD Review: Nice People, Nice Music Summary: 3 StarsThis a fairly long movie (over 130 minutes) but it moved along pretty well and is one of those infrequent films where there are no villains and no nasty people. Sometimes that's refreshing.
What it is, simply-put, is a biography of Broadway pioneer Jerome Kern. Robert Walker does a fine job playing him and Van Heflin plays Kern's likable friend. The two guys never argue; they just help each other out. That's also nice to see and is rare in a film. The only person who acts badly is the grownup version of Heflin's little girl, played by Lucille Bremer and she gets scolded for her selfish temper tantrums and then turns for the good in the end.
Most review books and reviewers here just emphasize the singing talent in this film and the fact that so many of Kern's songs are performed by famous entertainers, but I liked the story better than the musical numbers.
This is one of those 1940s Technicolor films so you know the colors and bright and impressive. The problem has been finding a good-quality DVD transfer ot this movie, but it looks like this "remastered" version has finally gotten it right. Forget all the other versions.
DVD Review: Autobiography Summary: 5 StarsJerome Kern, played by Robert Walker, composer extrodinaire is presented as the loving family man who achieved musical immortality. The film opens with a musical-within-a-musical version of his 1927, hit 'Show Boat' with Frank Sinatra singing 'Ol' Man River' in the finale. There are 25 stars and as many Kearn numbers presented through out the film which make it one of the finest musical tributes to a composer ever filmed. You will thorughly enjoy the music and the songs with such notables as Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Dinah Shore, and many more. So just sit back, relax and be entertained for two hours of memorable music.
DVD Review: One of my all-time favorite MGM musicals Summary: 5 Stars
I always loved this movie for its story of the life of Jerome Kern and for the beautiful music he wrote. the musical numbers were typical MGM, beautuifully done in beautiful costumes. The quality of the DVD was fabulous!!
DVD Review: Talented stars at their best! Summary: 4 StarsTill the Clouds Roll by is an all-star musical that is similar to "Ziegfeld Follies." (Although I like "Till the Clouds Roll By" better!) It is the biography and music of Jerome Kern (played by Robert Walker).
Judy Garland (who at the time was pregnant with Liza Minnelli)is Marilyn Miller, a Broadway star who gets to sing some of his great songs - "Look For the Silver Lining" and "Who Stole My Heart Away." And, of course, they couldn't do a movie about Jerome Kern without putting some songs from "Show Boat" in it. Kathryn Grayson sings "Make Believe" with Tony Martin (who was Cyd Charisse's husband of 50-something years). Probably the most famous number from this movie would have to be Frank Sinatra's rendition of "Ol' Man River." There's also a great "I Won't Dance" number performed by Van Johnson and Lucille Bremer (who plays Jerome's best friends daughter).
Over all, this is a good movie with LOTS of musical numbers performed by some VERY talented singers!
DVD Review: This Warner Remastered Edition is the only one to get Summary: 4 StarsAmazon lists some 30-odd different releases of Till the Clouds Roll By, but this newly remastered edition from Warner Home Video (ASIN: B000EBD9SA) is the only version worth buying. The cliche that you get what you pay for is definitely true in this case; all other editions available are ripped from public domain prints of the film, with greatly varying quality in both video and audio.
As other reviewers have pointed out, the 'biopic' story is one of the hokiest that Hollywood ever committed to screen, bearing little resemblance to the life of the real Jerome Kern -- but the great songs just keep coming, and coming.
And this Warner remaster is filled with important extras that you won't want to miss -- other reviewers have listed them in detail so there's no need to repeat them here.
Description of Till the Clouds Roll By (Remastered Edition)Light bio-pic of American Broadway pioneer Jerome Kern, featuring renditions of the famous songs from his musical plays by contemporary stage artists, including a condensed production of his most famous: Showboat.
