DVD Reviews of The Zen of ScreamingDVD Review: Good product, but too much self-advertising Summary: 4 StarsIf you want to say something, then just say it, most of us don't need protracted testimonials--we bought the DVD for the techniques, not the 10-minute commercials featuring Andrew WK belching his approval for the Melissa Cross system.
That said, and even despite the fact that I can not stand ROOOAR metal, I can appreciate the artwork of the cover, and Cross's charming personality.
She doesn't offer many tips, but the area she does cover was what I was looking for, so I guess it doesn't matter.
I'm waiting with baited breath for the sequel to this DVD.
DVD Review: voice saver Summary: 5 Starswanna sing like a madman (or madwoman) and not lose your voice? then buy this dvd. 3 hours of info on how to do the job right without tearing your voice up.
DVD Review: Clarification Summary: 5 StarsAccording to Melissa Cross's website [...], this DVD is intended to teach the foundations for 'screaming'. There is a second DVD available that teaches 'screaming' more in-depth (The Zen of Screaming 2), but this DVD is not currently available on the Amazon.com website. It can only be purchased on her website as of right now.
DVD Review: Save Yourself Summary: 4 StarsThis is a great tool for protecting your voice. I've had tons of throat problems over the years and this DVD has really helped me be able to find my voice again - without pain! The only drawback is that as you watch the DVD over again to get the instruction you have to keep watching the other guys give their opinions and experiences on the method. I wish it were cut or tracked so that you could just skip to the next bit of information without wading thru the commentary.
But otherwise it's a valuable tool. Thanks, Melissa!
DVD Review: Some good vocal techniques, but..... Summary: 3 StarsWhether listening to old-school classic singers like James Brown, Ian Gillan, David Clayton-Thomas, Janis, Chaka, Linda Ronstadt, Steven Tyler, up through more recent stuff of Pantera, Lamb of God, Slipknot, etc., I've studied them through the years (live, tv, video or dvd, or reading what singers themselves have said about screaming - or what others have said about them.)
Linda Ronstadt years ago was quoted as saying she wasn't comfortable singing like that because it hurt. A friend of mine once saw David Clayton-Thomas (Blood, Sweat & Tears) in concert and said when he screamed, the mic screen was touching his lips...an indication of some technique involved, not just blasting vocal cords into oblivion. Phil Anselmo seems to no longer have the range he had in older albums such as Cowboys From Hell.
What I've taken away from it all, is that each singer has had a very different approach for how to scream. Some have done it right, some shredded their voices, and some were just damn lucky that - - at least for a time - - they were simply blessed with vocal cords able to tolerate more abuse than those of us lesser mortals. And like most singers, I always wondered how I could get it RIGHT without hurting myself.
Pros: the dvd is well-produced and Melissa is an engaging and knowledgable teacher. I've been a vocalist for years, but being self-taught as so many singers of rock and popular music are, I often have sung incorrectly and am just damn lucky I managed not to hurt my vocal cords permanently in the process. Her techniques are valuable for the singer looking to protect their voice from improper use. I'm slowly figuring out how to put to good use the breathing and control pointers she shares. Once I get it all together, I'll be a better, stronger vocalist for it.
Cons: There are several programs for proper singing. I bought THIS specifically to learn how to scream. All in all, it really does not illustrate how to actually scream. In fact, when I completed a first viewing of the entire program, I thought, "There must be a second dvd with this that I didn't see...", because the whole thing seemed somehow unfinished. It just sort of...ended. A past reviewer of this product was most spot-on in saying this doesn't teach you how to scream, but how to scream correctly - - a big difference.
And yes, there is a LOT of time spent on excerpts of bands singing Melissa's praises. Buyers of this product would be MUCH better served, if those snippets were confined to opening and closing credits, with the second half of the dvd spent strictly on the actual, physical specifics of how to produce "safe" screaming.
All in all, this is a very good lesson for learning some useful vocal techniques, and I'm glad I bought it. But I rated it as I did simply because the title doesn't deliver enough of what it promises. I'll wait to see what others are saying about her second Zen of Screaming DVD just released, before I consider buying it.
