DVD Review: Black Classis
Summary: 5 Stars

The is the black version of the wizard of oz. If you're black and you haven't seen this, something is wrong. This movie is a family favorite. It used to come on everything Thanksgiving or Christmas when everyone were together. And all of the kids used to get in front of the Tv to watch. Today my kids even love it, it is a must have classic!

DVD Review: Awesome movie!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an awesome movie. It is much more interesting and fun than the original version. And, I like seeing what Michael Jackson looked like as a normal person before too many plastic surgeries!

DVD Review: Not As Bad As It's Been Said
Summary: 3 Stars

There's films out there that have received universal bad reviews. And over the years film fans just assume the bad energy surrounding a film is true and repeat the negative review. (Ishtar, Yentl, The Wiz).

I re-watched The Wiz last night after not having seen it for probably 20 years.

It's NOT THAT BAD! It's pretty good, actually.

All I seem to remember from the collective bad energy surrounding this movie is (a) the cinematography was too dark and depressing, (b) the screenwriter was into EST at the time he wrote this and the message of the film was impossibly cerebral.

Well, first I'll address the film's message. Frankly, The Wiz makes more sense to me than the 1939 film! The Wiz seems to say, get rid of those crows in your head (the garbage) that tell you that you can't do something or become someone different. At the end of The Wiz, Dorothy has done that and The Wiz has not -- in fact, he seems confused about his future.

In the 1939 film, I have always been conflicted about its message: Don't go looking for your heart's content outside your own back yard --- which seems a little provincial and limiting!

Some of the cinematography in The Wiz is dark -- in the NIGHT scenes! When the sun comes up, the film can be quite vibrant. The Wiz is not shot like a 1939 musical. It has its own style and can be quite beautiful.

My only complaint about The Wiz is that it needed a firmer hand with some of the editing. Some of the scenes ramble on too long, in my opinion. And some of the performances venture into over-the-top territory, including Miss Ross.

But, on the whole, I was very surprised by the truthful, deep performances that Lumet got out of his cast. There's a deep connection happening on screen for most of them.

"Home" slayed me. Diana Ross is channeling TRUTH in that scene. Sure, it looks like they went back and over-dubbed it. But that doesn't negate her amazing connection to the song, which is obvious.

I like The Wiz an awful lot! It's not a train wreck. It's got more positive things happening in it than the collective bad energy that surrounds it says.

In my opinion, the negative energy comes a lot from a comparison to the Judy Garland film. Sure, it's hard to avoid. And The Wiz maybe did itself a disservice by paying homage to the 1939 film sometimes (i.e. the curling up of the dead witch's toes). But like others have said, if you leave your own baggage about Judy Garland and the MGM musical at the door, The Wiz has many great aspects to enjoy.

One last thing: Quincy Jones really took the show's music to a great level for the film. The soundtrack is outstanding.

DVD Review: theatrical
Summary: 5 Stars

Just a wonderfull portraint of the biggest urban jungle called NY. The WIZ is also a look into the middle class African American who desire to better themselves.

Description of The Wiz (30th Anniversary Edition w/ Bonus CD)

Ease on down the yellow-brick road with the 30th Anniversary Edition of The Wiz, starring superstars Diana Ross and Michael Jackson! Relive all of the magic of this beloved musical when Dorothy is whisked away to the enchanting wonderland of Oz, where she encounters the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Lion. The Wiz features spectacular musical numbers from legendary producer Quincy Jones and an all-star cast including Lena Horne, Richard Pryor, Nipsey Russell and Ted Ross. With a digitally remastered picture and the unforgettable soundtrack in new 5.1 surround sound, it's an experience of the land of Oz unlike anything you've seen before!
Directed by Sidney Lumet (Serpico) and penned by Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin), this lavish 1978 adaptation of the Broadway hit The Wiz was the biggest production filmed in New York City up to that point, utilizing the newly revamped Astoria Studios and locations around the city. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, and Ted Ross (reprising his Tony-winning role as the Lion) star in this Academy Award-nominated musical for the whole family. The Wiz is probably the grandest take on L. Frank Baum's classic tale The Wizard of Oz. The production team created sets with a sense of urban magic and spectacle: a New York subway station literally comes to life, and the massive plaza between the World Trade Center towers is transformed into the Emerald City, featuring nearly 400 dancers with three costume changes. Like all good musicals, the Quincy Jones arrangements are highly hummable long after viewing (especially the funky "Ease On Down the Road" and the inspirational "Brand New Day"). In an era before MTV, the camera stays nearly stationary as Ross and Lena Horne vocally soar through their numbers. Their stage-like performances successfully make the leap to film, making The Wiz a testament to their singing talents and star presence. The then-thirtysomething Ross raised some eyebrows playing the traditionally teenaged Dorothy, but she and her supporting cast (including Richard Pryor as the Wiz) carry the tunes with an infectious verve that will appeal to folks of all ages. --Shannon Gee
