DVD Review: IF YOU LOVE THE BOOK, DON'T watch the 1979 cartoon

I made the mistake of thinking the 1979 feature length cartoon actually had some basis in the book. A fatal mistake.

Any resemblance to the book is over once it goes to cartoonland (much too soon) whereupon it becomes the most vapid, boring piece of marshmallow fluff ever seen. Inane repetitive lyrics will have anyone over the age of tot-hood crying, please not again!

Take the absolute worst writer, songwriter or animator from the Disney Studio and even they wouldn't wipe their shoes on this sorry film.

James Mason as Grimes the Sweep was the only saving grace to the film and unfortunately his screen time was all too short. No one else came close to his calibre of acting.

Fine for tots. Adults - Don't waste your time. I can't recommend buying it. I can't even recommend renting it. Save your money to buy any one of the various beautifully illustrated copies of the book that are available. Read this timeless classic to your kids. It's not boring, trite, offensive or condescending AND it speaks to kids and adults of all ages.

I love toons as much as any other big kid out there but this DVD gets dumped at the Good Will bin. With so many outstanding childrens' books and films available, don't bother with this dog.
