DVD Reviews of The Twilight Saga: New Moon (Two-Disc Special Edition)DVD Review: A great movie, if you hate movies and love pretty boys... Summary: 3 Stars
*Disclaimer: This account is attached to my husband's email address, any views stated below are not his. In fact, he would appreciate that I point out that he is far to manly and mature to appreciate the "Twilight Saga" books or movies.*
That said, I am married and have three kids. I'm a young-ish mother (31) but would definately consider myself too old to be reviewing this movie, let alone admit to watching it. Yes, I read the books. My little brother's girlfriend forced them upon me. I was on vacation and pretty desperate for reading material. Honestly, I thought they were rediculous. Meyers defiantely tapped into the emoshallownaiveteenager psyche. It was obnoxious, adding to that the mundane drama of teenage life (prom, movie dates, popularity, gym class...) I had a hard time justifying the time spent reading/watching. But I stick with it, for two reasons: One, I was a huge fan of vampire lore as a teenager. I read Bram Stoker and just about the entire Anne Rice series (I lost my interest in the second or third to last book.) So, I decided to see what the 2.0 version of The Vampire was like. Second, I have a daughter who is breaking into the age where she is becoming vulnerable to pop culture and mass consumerism. I feel like I need to stay tuned into what she's interested in. She's eight. A bit young, but her older "cousin" (my brother's girlfriend's daughter) was into these movies, because her mom was into them and she (my daughter) wanted to watch the movies... So, I got ahead of my daughter and read the books and watched the movies before her to make sure they were "o.k.". I will note that these films were the first time she's seen serious kissing on screen. Aside from the later "Harry Potter" movies, she's never seen live action characters "making out". I still feel a twinge of quilt over that bit. Otherwise, my conscience is clear. I did not read or watch any part of "The Twilight Saga" for my own enjoyment. And I will go on record as saying that as far as vampires go, the "Twilight" "Vampires" are pretty pathetic.
Vampires are doomed to an eternity of evil and misery. They feed on the blood of humans and are the living dead. They can't stand the sun and it's pretty freanking hard to kill them. That's pretty much the official definition... Not so in "The Twilight Saga". It's one thing to change them a bit and make them modern and appealing to this new generation of emoshallownaiveteenagers. But too far, I say! Too far! These aren't vampires! Vampires don't have sex. The whole drinking blood is a metaphor for sex, so actually having sex is retardedly gratuitous. I'm not against sex, not at all. In fact, it would have been far more interesting in a mildly bestial way if Bella had had sex with Jacob, but that's just me. Vampires aren't "vegetarians" and they would never be doctors. Unless it was an elaborate cover identity to get access to more blood. The whole thing about how hard it is to kill a vampire, even according to the characters in the books/movies is contradicted. According to the "Saga" all you have to do is twist their head off. In the first film, you had to burn the bits and pieces. In the third film, they don't even bother. And I won't even go into the whole you-can-go-out-in-broad-daylight-as-long-as-it's-cloudy-out-or-you-live-in-upstate-Washington part. These aren't vampires. These are just really hawt people with some mild super powers who are a little harder to kill, unless they break their necks.
If you can get past all that, you are then confronted with the characters. I'm sorry. You have Bella. Poor, pathetic Bella. She's lame, before she even meets Edward, she's just so blah. And the actress who plays her is TERRIBLE! The whole breath holding, gasping, "I'm gonna vomit" method acting is annoying. The only thing worse than her acting is her character. Bella is boring and uber dependent, and even worse she's indecisive. "Do I love Edward, do I love Jacob?" Here's how her inner monologue should go: "Edward's really hot... He's immortal and damn near invincible, and really hot. He worships the ground I walk on for some bizarre reason and he'd die an unnatural death for me. And he's sooo hot. He's almost as emo as I am, and that's almost impossible to achieve. Unless you've been miserable for like a hundred years. His brothers and Dad are so hot too! And there's all that money and the super cool cars. But why does Edward drive a Volvo hatchback? It's so safe and mundane... shouldn't he drive a motorcycle or have a euro supercar? Whatever, he is so hot! We could go anywhere in the world and live like rockstars. Hot Rockstars! Gawd, he's just soooooo hot! Although... Jabob does love me, and he hasn't picked up on all the not so subtle hints I've dumped on him. He's so pathetic, and for some reason, I am drawn to that. He's sort of hot, in a primitive way. He barely wears clothes, either because he keeps shredding them when he transforms or because he's kind of poor. He lives on "The Res" and it's kind of rustic there. His family doesn't have much money but they do have a pretty neat tribe. A tribe that I really don't fit in. But there is that dumpy truck that Jacob fixed up for me, I guess he could keep it running so I'd always have transportation. Why does he have to go everywhere in cut off shorts, that so eewww! And he turns into a giant dog that might disfigure me in a fit of spousal abuse. I guess Jacobs good looking, but... uck. Edward is sooo hot!"
Needless to say, I don't get Bella's inner struggle. I don't get a lot of things. Maybe I'm just too old and a little too intelligent. What I do get, and what I have no shame in admitting is that the guys are a wonderful assortment of eye candy. Totally Hotties on Parade! I could keep the movies on continuously just to see them running around, as long as it's all on mute. And I have to agree with a previous review, the non major characters are much more interesting. Jasper is so hot! And he has that southern gentleman thing going on, I'm ashamed just thinking of what I'd do... Edward is very pretty as well, very pretty. A little boring in his lack of personality and emotion. He does nothing when Bella kisses Jacob. Come on! Have a little pride, dude. You got punked, telepathicly. And they knew you were watching. Sickening. But, you're so pretty. You are forgiven. So, all the guys are hot. Jacob is the least hot, but he's still better looking than average. I'm a little unsure if the women are as hot as the guys, and I'm not convinced it wasn't in purpose. Rosalie is supposed to be the most beautiful girl in the world. The actress playing her is pretty, but hardly up to the standards of the books.
Alice is cute in a no-vampire-would-ever-be-her and she's-more-of-a-pixie-or-a-fairy sort of way. Rosalie is a bitch, but that's a little more my pace. I don't know what the deal is with Emmet and Esme, maybe they're fillers. Dr. Cullen is beautiful and I could see more of him too. Though his whole premise is weak, but acceptable since he's hot. The Voltari (I don't care if that's spelled right) is kind of a weak immitation of Anne Rice's Paris Coven, but at least they act like vampires. I'm gonna be the only one to say this, but I didn't think that Dakota Fanning was all that brilliant. Whatever. She's better than Bella.
This movie was an improvement on the first, the acting did improve somewhat and the effects were neat. I was a little relieved to have that break from the Bella and Edward catastrophe, but still felt the first part of the movie was flat. When Edward does come back it's a mad dash through the rest of the movie. It felt rushed, like they wasted too much time in the beginning and squeezed the rest of the book into the last "half" or whatever after Alice shows up. And how sad is it that my favorite part and character from the movie was Aro? Probably because he's a proper Rice-esque vampire... Why would Michael Sheen waste his talents here? I'm glad he did though. It saved the movie for me.
So, to recap: This movie was better than the first, but only because it seems that the actors grew into their roles and maybe took some lessons or were edited better. IMDB gave it two stars and I think that was about right. The movie is perfect for what it is, a teenage chic-flick with beauty over substance actors. The movie would have been greatly improved if there was no Bella, Edward was less of a wimp, Jacob wasn't pathetic and the trio got a lot less screen time. In fact, if it was a Cullens on a bad-ass rampage, running with Aro sort of thing it would totally rock. Instead it's what happens to vampires in a Nicholas Sparks universe, disgusting. Since I am reviewine "New Moon" I think it would be wrong to comment too much on "Eclipse" or "Breaking Dawn", but I will say that "Eclipse" was better as a movie and after reading "Breaking Dawn" I am utterly confused as to how they can make two decent films out of it. It was laughably stupid as a book. There are some rules in the literary universe that shouldn't be broken.
I am a fraud though, in a way. I'm buying this for my daughter today, she's been nagging me since we got home from vacation. And when Eclipse comes out, I'll get it (December, really?). I took my daughter to the movies to see it and I won't mind seeing the Jasper parts again. I am also under no illusions when it comes to seeing "Breaking Dawn", we'll be there. Not the first day, but the Saturday after. There are some train wrecks you just don't want to miss!
