DVD Reviews of The True Story of Alexander the Great (History Channel)

DVD Review: Great companion DVD for studying Alexander the Great
Summary: 5 Stars

My kids both have enjoyed learning about Alexander the Great and they were thrilled to watch this DVD. They have even asked to watch it again, picking it over more popular forms of entertainment. For that reason alone I should give it 5 stars! I realize there are a few shortcomings with the DVD but those are a result of this not being a high budget Hollywood film and/or this DVD being limited to about 2.5 hours running time. Of course there could have been more material included and flashier battle scenes, but that wasn't the purpose of this presentation.

This is great companion material to help bring Alexander the Great to life for anyone who is studying him. The story is presented in a way where you can identify what is fact and what is fiction. They don't shy away from Alexander's dark side, but it is also handled in a tasteful manner.

DVD Review: Not the FULL True Story
Summary: 3 Stars

I, like others, am a bit disappointed. I knew little about Alexander the Great, other than that he had conquered and created a vast empire. Now I only know a little more military history after watching this documentary.

I feel like this documentary doesn't tell the real reasons Alexander is considered a GREAT. What about the social impact his conquests had? How did he affect the world in a longstanding sense? His vast empire was split up and dissappeared upon his death, so according to the limited information this long video shows...why is he Great?

From a bit of reading since watching this video, I have found that he wasn't great just because he was an awesome military leader...but because of his policy after the battle!

Once again, the History Channel focuses too much on the "football game history" (which is okay if all you care about is how he beat up on the world) and not on the real historical impact of what the military conquest achieved!

DVD Review: NOT Closed Captioned nor Subtitled
Summary: 1 Stars

Contrary to what is listed here at Amazon, the True Story of Alexander the Great is neither closed captioned nor subtitled. This was a total waste of money for me and I will have to give it a low rating as I could not hear what was being said.

DVD Review: The True Story of Alexander the Great (History Channel)
Summary: 5 Stars

Wonderfully produced and executed presentation of the life and conquests of Alexander. The History Channel has created a terrific means by which to teach history; it is very engaging, easy to follow and has made me want to purchase more of these kinds of history lessons!

DVD Review: A great DVD about Alexander
Summary: 5 Stars

I found this DVD to be a fantastic and engageing documentary on arguably the greatest conqueror in history. Some of the other reviewers commented that it was too short??? It is over 2 hours long...not sure what else they were hoping for. The DVD takes you from the childhood of Alexander through his adulthood and demise. They quote Heroditus, Plutarch, and a few other ancient sources on Alexander throughout the documentary. This DVD does a good job reinacting scenes from Alexanders life. The one thing that they DID fall a little short on was the discriptions of battles. Gogamela was the one that stood out the most. They neglected some details that I would have appreciated. I really wish they would have given some of the battle estimates as far as numbers go to get an idea as to what Alexander was up against. Many of the battle scenes use the cheesy CGI for parts of it. I don't care for the CGI stuff, but was not particularly bothered because they didn't use a ton of it. I did take a Greek history class a couple of years ago and, in all I learned a lot from this DVD and it was an excellent and entertaining refresher. I highly recommend this DVD if you know nothing about Alexander the Great, or if you simply would like to refresh your knowledge without having to spend the next few days or weeks reading a history book.

Description of The True Story of Alexander the Great (History Channel)

Tutored by Aristotle, helpless witness to his father's assassination, and a brilliant, pioneering tactician, Alexander the Great had conquered the known world--and sealed his legacy as one of history's most remarkable rulers--by the age of 25. In the year 334 B.C., 20-year-old King Alexander of Macedonia decided to bring the farthest reaches of the world under one domain. Over the next 12 years, he led a grand army across more than 20,000 miles and eventually brought all of Asia under his control, only to perish from battle wounds at the age of 32. Incorporating dramatic onsite reenactments with high-end computer graphics and the expertise of renowned scholars, THE TRUE STORY OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT is special presentation from THE HISTORY CHANNEL?, examining the life and career of this military genius, impassioned lover, and fearless leader. Hosted by Peter Woodward (Conquest), this definitive program is available on DVD for the first time.
