DVD Review: A Different Take on the 'Wild West'
Summary: 4 Stars
I selected "The Trail to Hope Rose" to add to my DVD collection for two reasons: one, it has Lou Diamond Phillips in it, an actor often under-rated; two, the promise of something a bit different to the usual 'cowboys and Indians' theme.
The grittiness of the time was well-displayed here. Mining was a major industry in the still-developing United States, and the conditions in which the miners lived - not to mention the lack of humanity that was endured in these 'mining camps - is not spared. Nor are we spared examples of the decisions that drove many men to this work and the effect it had on them. How the miners' women - often no better than prostitutes, whether willing or not - fared is more than hinted at.
Diamond Phillips is, as usual, excellent in his portrayal of a man with a past he is trying to forget and put behind him. He works well with Marina Black, the abused young woman he rescues from another miner. Their relationship is old-time-sweet, but believably so, and this enables the story to focus on other aspects, not just a budding romance. Ernest Borgnine is delightful as the lonely widowed farmer who befriends Diamond Phillips, and Lee Majors, almost unrecognisable under a black Stetson that appears constantly glued to his head, plays a good part as the crusty but decent town Marshall trying to keep the perpetually nasty mine owner, excellently played by Warren Stevens, from totally terrorising the town. I should add that this was Warren Steven's first screen role in 15 years and it was wonderful to see him in action again!
Overall, not an award-winner by any stretch, but a good movie to add to a DVD collection if you enjoy western-themed flicks, and the perfect film to watch while curled up on the sofa on a cold winter's day.
