I first read the book when I was still a college student in China. The story was so beautiful and I remember that I finished reading the story within one day, did not even get time to eat because I could not stop reading. It was such a touching, romantic and sad story and made me crying and crying.
Now 15 years later, I was read the story in English again. The story in English is just equally beautiful and was more subtle and revealing in some areas than the Chinese translated version. The Chinese version did an excellent job too though.
Then I finally bought the DVD. Oh, I have to say that the whole cast crew were just phenomenal. They are just what I imagined they should have looked like. Richard Chamerlain was just unbelievable. He was Ralph. As one other reviewer pointed us, once you watch the movie, you'd wish that these people are live and truly exist.
What a struggle between flesh and soul. What a guilty yet pure love! This is definitely a DVD I will keep forever.

There is so much that has already been said about this (mostly overextended hype) that I will not elaborate. However, it is interesting to read the effusive reviews lauding this on par with an Australian Gone With The Wind. It's not even close. It does have the verboten theme concerning a Catholic Priest who is tormented with guilt,lust,love,etc., now standard stuff which was pretty shocking when the book first came out, but, considering the goings-on in the church now, tame by comparison. Richard Chamberlain tends to go a little over the top in his portrayal of Ralph De Bricassart, his love scenes are rather laughable. Rachel Ward is absolutely unbelievable as Meggie Cleary. An actress she defintely is NOT!
I read somewhere that her acting was so bad at times while making this series that Richard Chamberlain used to bang his head against a wall in frustration. Barbara Stanwyck, of course, is always terrific in anything she does. She extends a tremendously moving performance as the aging doyenne of Drogheda, lusting for Ralph. She is, really, the only reason to watch. The rest of the actors, in particular Jean Simmons and Richard Kiley, are excellent in their characterizations; however, although it has the scope and depth of an epic,it is still just a tremendously overblown chick flick.

The passion and the guilt make for compelling drama, but a stellar cast of supporting players adds muscle to the proceedings: Barbara Stanwyck (who won an Emmy for her work as Meggie's tough aunt), Jean Simmons, Richard Kiley, Christopher Plummer, Bryan Brown, and Mare Winningham. Chamberlain, who was something of the king of the miniseries form at the time, is very good in the lead, as is the often-underrated Ward.
