DVD Review: Unimpressive 1930s "B" Flick

Ginger Rogers (1911-1995) was certainly one of the hardest working actresses of the 1930s and 1940s, appearing in everything from her famous musicals with Fred Astaire to her Oscar-winning turn in the hard-edged drama KITTY FOYLE. Along the way, particularly in the early 1930s, she appeared in dozens of completely unmemorable "B" movies, of wich THE THIRTEENTH GUEST is merely one.
The story is typical of murder mysteries that were popular in the 1920s and 1930s, and it borrows a great deal from such silent classics as THE CAT AND THE CANARY and THE BAT. Thirteen years ago a man invited his family to a dinner during which he read a will that specifies a thirteenth guest--who never arrives--will be his heir. Then, in the way of such films, he dies immediately, leaving his money-hungry family to wonder what it is all about. Thirteen years later Ginger Rogers, one of the possible heirs, shows up with a clue: a piece of paper on which is writeen "13 --- 13 --- 13." Needless to say, the murders promptly begin.
Rogers always gives a first-class performance, but in general THE THIRTEENTH GUEST is poorly filmed, directed, scripted, and acted. More than one critic has noted the film includes the hint of a homosexual relationship between two men, and those interested in the history of gay and lesbian characters in film may wish to watch the movie for this reason, but even they will be hard pressed to find much of interest. Best left to extremely hardcore Ginger Rogers fans, who will nonetheless be left unimpressed.
