DVD Reviews of The Skeleton Key (Widescreen Edition)

DVD Review: Bayou Hoodoo
Summary: 3 Stars

Coming from New Orleans, I was fascinated with voodoo and the mysticism that surrounds the area. However, I'd never heard of Hoodoo. Being a fan of scary movies, Gena Rowlands, Kate Hudson, and spirit worlds and dealings, how could I refuse this movie? While it wasn't the best I've ever seen, I loved it!

DVD Review: Very creepy!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a highly effective horror movie. In short, a live-in aid/nurse takes a job at a very remote Louisiana home to care for an invalid, only to find out that the people are not what she expected, with an interesting voodoo twist thrown in. A nearly constant mood of dread and eerieness is skillfully maintained throughout, and the ending/climax is well orchestrated with a few good twists. Good acting, a good script and strong production values. Highly recommended.

DVD Review: Where's the second part?
Summary: 4 Stars

This is an enjoyable film.

Reading through some reviews, I saw some strange critiques such as: 1) By depicting some barbaric caucasians lynching their slaves, the film must be racist! Sure. Every movie or story must depict human society as a heaven where everyone lives in harmony with other people no matter their race! 2) By describing two evilish hoodoo practitioners as black people, the film must hint that back people are superstitious, inferior, or worse! Please. Don't make general extrapolating accusation based on two particular antagonists in a particular story. If a story depicts a Hitler slaughtering millions of people, does that mean all caucasians are devilish?

Many people don't like that the film has a negative ending, where evil triumphs over virtue. Well, the film is just the first part of a story. The film makers intended to have a second part in which the right will fight back and destroy the wrong. Unfortunately, four years after the movie come out, they still don't know how to do the second part!

One possible reason is that they can't find a talented script writer who can create an intriguing and convincing story of how the good characters could fight back, rescue the protagonists and destroy the evilish characters.

Sure there are easy ways to do that. For example, the friend of the heroine can convince the chief police officer to arrest the evilish antagonists, put them in a room and perform the hoodoo ritual to reverse effects of the first hoodoo ritual on the protagonists. Plain vanilla solution. No twist. No intrigue. No suspense. No mystery. But who would want to see such a movie?

I hope they can come up with a good sequel to provide a resolution for the problem created at the end of the first movie. That would make the story complete and highly entertaining. We might need a JK Rowling to come up with a brilliant climax to the fight between good and evil. Is there a script writer out there talented enough for that challenge?

DVD Review: The Skeleton Key (Widescreen Edition) (2005)-Great horror flick!
Summary: 4 Stars

The Skeleton Key (Widescreen Edition) (2005)- I give the Skeleton Key four full stars for a good plot, script, direction, acting, and on location footage. The ending to this movie was totally unpredictable and kept me guessing until the very conclusion. Very good performance by the very lovely Kate Hudson and lots of old New Orleons horror atmosphere.

DVD Review: Better Than I Expected
Summary: 4 Stars

This was an outstanding film for an outstanding price. Although the item was suppose to be new, I did'nt expect that it would actually be in mint condition.
The product was shipped to me in the original wrapper (unopened). I received this item in record time (about 3 days after ordering).I was thoroughly satisfied with my purchase. I have found a home to order hard to find items for a reasonable price.

Description of The Skeleton Key (Widescreen Edition)

When caroline takes a job in louisianas bayou she unlocks a deadly secret involving magic that pulls her into a terrifying world of strange & frightening incidences. The key to escaping may lie in a decrepit attic but if she dares to believe in what she discovers everything she fears will become real! Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 09/18/2007 Starring: Kate Hudson Gena Rowlands Run time: 104 minutes Rating: Pg13
Steeped in rain, humidity, and eerie bayou atmosphere, The Skeleton Key is an entertaining supernatural thriller that makes excellent use of its Louisiana locations. New Orleans and the rural environs of Terrebonne Parish are crucial in setting up the creepy circumstances that find compassionate caregiver Caroline Ellis (Kate Hudson) newly employed at the backwater plantation home of Violet (Gena Rowlands) and her invalid husband Ben (John Hurt), who's been rendered mute and seemingly helpless by a recent stroke. The place is rife with mystery, shrouded in the secrets of a suspicious past and, under Violet's stern supervision, plagued by superstition involving the use of Hoodoo magic spells (not to be confused with Voodoo, as explored in the similarly suspenseful Angel Heart) intended to protect the house from harm. But Caroline soon discovers the source of the mystery, and why Ben (who can barely utter a word) is so desperate to escape his seemingly comfortable domesticity. There are a few loopholes in the screenplay by prolific horror writer Ehren Kruger (The Ring and The Brothers Grimm), but director Iain Softley (Wings of the Dove) expertly emphasizes the edgy air of mystery, pushing some effective shocks while encouraging fine work from Hudson, Peter Sarsgaard (as Violet's lawyer) and especially Rowlands, who's genuinely disturbing as Skeleton Key nears a twist ending that's undeniably effective. --Jeff Shannon
