Blu-ray Reviews of The Simpsons Movie [Blu-ray]

Blu-ray Review: If Only I Could Give It 10
Summary: 5 Stars

This film was bound to get mixed thoughts and reviews from those who were fans of old and hate the new generation Simpsons. After about Season 10 the simpsons simply slid into comic oblivion as most episodes simply lost that making fun of popculture intelligence that made it famous. One reason as to why the Simpsons series may have lost its comic touch is the loss of what could be argued as its best writers like Mike Reiss. Or the loss of its early years producers like John Swartzwelder or Jon Viti. These returned to add their classic touch to this movie and it's blatantly obvious that they played a massive part in this film.

To be honest all the blame can be issued out to anyone about the slow and painful downfall of the Simpsons series, but it's simply something that was inevitable. When you have a series that runs as long as the Simpsons, it's bound to take a slide. The Movie, however, picks up were around season 10 left off when it comes to comedic intelligence or satiring pop culture. This movies hot topic is the environment and how hysterical some people have become over the whole issue.

Most TV series such as the Family Guy Movie could be described as just 2 or 3 episodes planted together, and that was certainly the expectation when I first went into watching this film. I was very much surprised to see that it was nothing of the sort, it was as if it had started from scratch and gave us a true feature length movie that carried smoothly from start to finish. This left no stone un-turned when it came to making a mockery, politics, celebrities, the environment, religion, everything was made fun of in one way or another, in this movie and it was truly something that made me reminisce about the good ol' days.

The animation has obviously received an upgrade, much like every other TV to Movie cartoon series as it seems to be a healthy mixture of both CG and conventional animation. I honestly wish this was just something they could incorporate into the series as it would make it look a whole lot better. The voice acting is the typical great voice acting that we've come to expect from the Simpsons cast, adding on a few cameos of Green Day and Tom Hanks as the typical celebrity inclusion. I'm actually surprised they never had more of a celebrity influence in the movie considering they have a celeb in almost every episode. I would have enjoyed a cameo from Arnold Schwarzenegger as President Schwarzenegger.

The story is quite zaney and does what the original Simpsons did best and that's take an unreal story and have each character become included in their own way that perfectly matches their classic personality. Homer is obviously the catalyst that leads to the whole town buying for his blood. Lisa is obviously the morale side of the family trying to keep it all together alongside Marge. Bart also is the typical troublemaker of the movie who doesn't really care, but in the end wants to help out if he can.

I honestly loved this film and it was surprising how witty and nostalgic it became. These writers & producers from the old days of the series, who returned for this movie, should be brought back again for the series as you could genuinely see the difference in the writing and production when you compare it to the show with the usual writers of the current series'.

Description of The Simpsons Movie [Blu-ray]

Homer accidentally causes an environmental catastrophe which could doom Springfield forever. Homer now must save the city and rescue his family. Springfield's usual characters and new favorites all turn up in the first ever movie length version of the hit TV show, 18 years in the making.
The Simpsons had already ruled TV land for many years by the time they finally attempted to conquer the movie world as well. It was never any big secret that a Simpsons movie was in the works: Fox registered the domain name "Simpsonsmovie.com" in 1997, a full nine years before the film was finally greenlighted. When creator/producer Matt Groening?s creation finally made it to the big screen in 2007, it only turned out to be the biggest hit of the summer, raking in over $100 million gross in box-office receipts in its first week, before heading on to do over $500 million worldwide, proving that the best joke in the movie was actually played on the audience: "Why pay for something when you can see it for free?" asks Homer at the movie?s start. Naturally, all the trouble starts with him. When he adopts a pig ("Sir Oinks-A-Lot") destined for Krusty?s slaughterhouse, it triggers an environmental catastrophe, forcing the government to seal Springfield into a dome and destroy the city. While the family manages to escape and flee to Alaska, they eventually decide to return and help save the city in more-or-less classic Simpson fashion. As Homer?s joke about the audience shows, Groening and producer Al Jean are keenly aware that their franchise is first and foremost a TV show. Maybe a little too aware, as the movie fails to ever rise above anything more than an extended episode, and not even one of its best episodes at that. True, there are plenty of good jokes; the animation has been kicked up a notch to be particularly sharp and detailed; and there are some truly memorable moments such as Bart?s nude skateboard ride and the "Spider-Pig" song. But when the film finally materialized, the payoff for long years of anticipation turned out to be small as the movie failed to live up to its potential; it?s amusing but not truly funny. The Simpsons Movie leaves the impression that maybe the show?s writers and producers had already spent their best ideas on the best years of the TV show. Had it been made years earlier? well, we can only wonder what could have been. --Daniel Vancini
