DVD Reviews of The Simpsons - ChristmasDVD Review: A Simpsons Christmas Roast Summary: 4 StarsThough better known for its annual Halloween specials, the Christmas season is far from spared a roasting in the Simpsons household. This DVD cherry picks five episodes from various seasons, most with a Christmas theme, some with a tangential Christmas story line and even one that doesn't have anything at all to do with Christmas, except that it takes place in the winter.
"Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" comes from the first season. When Homer gets stiffed out of his year-end bonus at the nuclear power plant, he's forced to take a second job as a department store Santa to help pay for Christmas. The characters are pretty much defined, but the sharp humor and broad parody the series is so well known for is still in its infancy. This early episode has more in common with the old Rankin-Bass animated Christmas specials from the 60's and 70's. The tone is benign, less caustic in wit and humor. Still, the family dysfunction is present front and center: Homer's surliness, Bart getting a tattoo, and Patty and Selma's open disdain for Homer are just a few examples. The less than perfect family portrait is never better portrayed with the four working Christmas light decorations that adorn their house. In "Mr. Plow", Homer decides to start a plowing business only to be rivaled and eventually muscled out by Barney. Watching Linda Ronstadt appear in a mariachi outfit lends a mirthful lunacy to an episode that has absolutely nothing do with Christmas.
Rounding out the other episodes in this collection are "Miracle on Evergreen Terrace", "Grift of the Magi" and "She of Little Faith". My favorite is "She of Little Faith", in which Richard Gere stars as himself and Lisa undergoes a crisis of faith. The stunt voice casting is incidental to a great story line that dissects the artificiality of organized religion. When the church sells ad space to a corporation in order to pay for repairs, Lisa is incensed at how crassly the church has sold out. Disillusioned, she leaves her faith and becomes a Buddhist. In an attempt to bring her back into the First Church of Springfield, Marge tries to persuade Lisa with the lure of Christmas presents and her longstanding desire for the pony she's wanted since Season One. As always with The Simpsons, the ending is beside the point; the fun is in getting there and there's a particularly perverse and hysterical scene involving a candy cane and Reverend Lovejoy that needs to be seen to be appreciated.
"Grift of the Magi" takes on the commercialization of Christmas with equal comic sharpness. When a corporation takes over Springfield Elementary and uses the children to develop a new toy for the Christmas season, the result is Funzo, a mechanical monstrosity that talks baby-speak in a menacing robotic voice. The appearance of "Sir" Gary Coleman is just gravy on an already classic holiday skewering.
"Miracle on Evergreen Terrace" features Bart ruining the family Christmas when he intentionally wakes up early to get a sneak peek at the presents while the rest of the family still sleeps. A mishap occurs with a fire truck and their plastic tree burns into boiling vat of goo, taking all the gifts with it. To avoid punishment, Bart decides to blame the accident on non-existent burglars. Garnering the sympathy of the town, the Simpsons are showered with gifts donated from everyone in Springfield. When it's revealed that Bart lied, the townspeople revolt against the Simpsons, deciding to clean them out of their home to make up for all the donations. The ending is classic Simpsons: a little sweet and sour, but always done with heart.
"The Simpsons Christmas 2" was released a year after this DVD collection. Clearly this could have been sold as one DVD since combined, the collection would have featured a total of only 9 episodes. Ironic that the show can wickedly ridicule the Christmas season's greedy and increasingly commercial nature, only to be complicit in the very same accusations. Still, at $7.99, it's a decent price for any Simpsons fan even if I'm not completely sold on the inclusion of the "Mr. Plow" episode.
DVD Review: Perfect!!! Summary: 5 StarsIt was exactly what I wanted when I purchased it and I LOVED watching these episodes but it really made me wish the Simpsons would do more Christmas episodes like this! I wanted more at the end.
Mr. Plow though it was not a Christmas episode was freaking hilarious.
"Could you try not to scrape my asphalt?"-Plow Customer
"Kiss my asphalt"-Homer
"Put it in H!"- Foreign Car Dealer!
Freaking hilarious, so I even loved having that on there even if it wasn't a real Christmas episode. The Christmas ones were wonderful too. I always sort of hated Miracle on Evergreen Terrace but after watching it again now on DVD I can appreciate it for what it is and it is very funny. I was just kind of poed at how Bart ruined Christmas, but the references to It's a Wonderful Life and the hilarious things that ensue in the episode after it all goes down are worth it.
The extra isn't really that great IMO. Mr. Burns had more great moments than that, but the episodes make up for that big time.
Easily one of my favorite DVDs.
DVD Review: I love it. Summary: 4 StarsThis is nice offbeat answer to the endless Rudolf and Frosty movies that go on ;)
Even my kid has asked for it a couple times.
In this collection; you have: Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire, Mr Plow, Miracle on Evergreen Terrace, Grift of the Magi, She of Little Faith and the the Mr Burns Finest Moments Featurette.
Overall they are not bad. The featurette I could care less about.
One nice aspect of this DVD is the theme of Christmas as you will not have to sift through the box sets if you have them.
However, one problem is the missing play all option. I docked it one point for that.
Now if they would only make the Treetop of Horror into one set!
DVD Review: Great Simpsons Holiday DVD... Summary: 4 StarsI bought this DVD for my brother for Christmas, so I opened it up to see if the disk was broken and I ended up watching it.
"Simpsons roasting on an Open Fire" is a classic. I'll never get tired of Homer dressing up as Santa to bring in extra money because Marge had to spend all of the money on removing Bart's tattoo.
The stupidest Christmas episode, in my opinion, is the one with Gary Coleman. The school shuts down because Principal Skinner had to pay Fat Tony $2,000 for a broken wheelchair ramp, so the school ends up being bought by a toy company.
Anyway, great DVD for the Simpsons fan who has everything, and wants more.

DVD Review: Good. I Liked Most Of The Episodes! Summary: 3 StarsLast year I bought this Simpsons Christmas DVD and it is good and has some really good Christmas and winter themed episodes from The Simpsons and the best is Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire, and I also liked Mr. Plow, Miracle on Evergreen Terrace, and She of Little Faith but didn't like Gift of the Magi which only had one funny moment but was mostly very unfunny! This DVD is good but lacking any good special features!
Description of The Simpsons - ChristmasStudio: Tcfhe Release Date: 10/14/2008 For the Simpsons fan who has everything! While The Simpsons is more at home with Halloween horror, their Christmas episodes manage to (somewhat) warm the heart while staying true to the series' subversive muse. "She of Little Faith," to quote a disillusioned Lisa, "could not be more blasphemous," but it does boast guest voice Richard Gere as Lisa's Buddhist mentor. This collection also includes the vintage "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire," which launched the series, the classic "Mr. Plow" ("Call Mr. Plow/That's my name/That name again is Mr. Plow"), "Miracle on Evergreen Terrace," and "Grift of the Magi," with Gary Coleman making like Tiny Tim ("Whatchu talkin' bout...everyone!"). As holiday host Krusty the Clown proclaims in "Magi," this Simpsons stocking stuffer is guaranteed to give you and yours "a merry Christmas, a happy Hanukkah, a kwazy Kwanzaa, and a solemn and dignified Ramadan." --Donald Liebenson
