DVD Reviews of The Secret Garden (Keepcase)

DVD Review: A Winner!
Summary: 5 Stars

As a third grade teacher in an inner city, I wanted to give my students the opportunity to view this classic. My desire to show it was tempered by the knowledge that my all-Hispanic class would be put off by English accents and costumes that are as far from their experience as can be. I was pleasantly surprise as all of them sat in rapt attention throughout the entire movie. Their review is better than mine - the best movie experience that they have ever had. Jennifer wants me to tell you that it was superb (we're working on tier two words.)

DVD Review: The Secret Garden
Summary: 5 Stars

I enjoyed this movie. It is a great movie for kids. What a wonderful story. It's about a young boy who lose's his mother and he is in a wheel chair. The kids take him to the Secret Garden and that's where the fun begins. It was nice to see this little boy walk after being told that he never could go outside or ever walk again. His Dad comes home and they take him to the garden and then the son shows his father how he has learned how to walk again thanks to the garden.

DVD Review: One of best movies of all times for all ages, boys, girls, adults!
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the best movies of all time.
Not scary, not sad.
Not violent, not preachy.
No flying monkies or scary witches.
Dumbo's monther does not get put in cage. Bambi's mother does not die. There are no growling, menacing wolves/dogs, coyotes. There are no loud noises, ghosts, bullies, or children victimized by mean siblings/cousins/parents etc. No threatening, no bad words, No in your face talk, no put-downs.

This is an enjoyable, funny, and uplifting movie. It is a family movie without being dorky!

You can't help but be entranced by the plot, which centers on 10 year old boy & girl cousins in England in the 1800s, meeting for the first time, both of whom have had little in the way of parental contact. The girl is snobbish and aloof from having grown up lonely and cared for by servants in India and the boy is self-pitying and inactive, convinced that his poor health spells his doom. Self absorption abounds...until they unexpectedly discover each other's existence. Will these two strong willed children become friends? Will they join forces and discover a secret garden? Why is it secret?

Kids are the stars of the film, and whenever you have adults out of the way and kids in charge, children love the movie!
There's a bit of magic that children accept and love and even some adults want to believe in.

This film teaches the power of persistence and belief in yourself, and the power of having a friend.

DVD Review: All-time favorite!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is my absolute all-time favorite movie! I first saw it in the theater as a 16 year old and here I am in my 30's now and have watched it countless times. The music is beautiful, the casting is spot-on, and everything about this movie is perfectly perfect.

The movie does deviate slightly from the book (most notably in the deaths of Mary's parents), but I was not bothered in the least by the changes. I adore Kate Mabry as Mary and only wish she would appear in more films. I was pleased to see her play a small role in "Finding Neverland" but haven't seen her since. Andrew Knott as Dickon was also very good.

I definitely recommend this movie to young and old alike! An enchanting story of love, friendship, and healing set in a beautiful setting, what's not to like?!

DVD Review: Secret Garden UK version
Summary: 5 Stars

Very well directed and filmed....excellent casting and acting...happy to see it filmed at a real mansion, real gardens and gorgeous scenes of the moors. And fairly true to the original story.

Description of The Secret Garden (Keepcase)

Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 09/08/2009
Filmed before (and quite nicely) in 1949, Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's story was remade for this admirable 1993 release, executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Splendidly adapted by Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson, the film opens in India during the early 1900s, when young Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) is orphaned and sent to England to live in Misselthwaite Manor, the gloomy estate of her brooding and melancholy uncle, Lord Craven (John Lynch). Because the uncle is almost always away on travels, struggling to forget the death of his beloved wife, Mary is left mostly alone to explore the estate. Eventually she befriends the young brother of a staff maid and Lord Craven's apparently crippled son, who has been needlessly bedridden for years. Together the three children restore a neglected garden on the estate grounds, and in doing so they set the stage for a moving reaffirmation of life and love. Filmed with graceful style and careful attention to the intelligence and cleverness of young children, The Secret Garden is that rarest breed of family film that transcends its own generic category, encouraging a sense of wonder and optimism to become a rewarding experience for viewers of any age. --Jeff Shannon
