DVD Reviews of The Secret GardenDVD Review: Beautiful music, garden scenery, and message, ultimately. Summary: 4 StarsAlways a favorite of mine, The Secret Garden is an enriching tale about turning loss and sorrow into gratitude and love. Recent orphan Mary Lennox is uprooted from her home in India and sent to live with her uncle in a faraway mansion (seemingly in Britain). When she arrives, instead of being greeted by a warm, loving family, she is met by a cold housekeeper with a dislike for children. Her uncle keeps to himself, still mourning the loss of his wife, who died ten years previously.
As Mary tries to belong in a household of scuttling servants, she explores her own identity and feelings, which is new for her, having never cried before. The turning point comes when she gets the courage to ask her uncle "for a little bit of earth."
This movie really captures the emotions of pride, humility, fear, curiousity and happiness. It was one of those "comfort movies" I would watch as a young girl when I was sick. Beautiful music, garden scenery, and message, ultimately.
DVD Review: A wonderful rendition of the Secret Garden! Summary: 5 StarsI love this movie so much, that I just bought it for a friend of mine. My copy is so old its in VHS. This edition of the Secret Garden has an artistic spin on a classic tale. The scenes in the Garden are beautiful, as are all the scenes in the area of Mistlethwaite Manor, and the music is fitting for all scenes.
Shopping on Amazon.com, this movie was easy to find and reasonably priced.

Description of The Secret GardenThe enchanting classic about a young girl who brings an English country house's garden - and the people it touches - magically back to life. Maggie Smith and John Lynch star. Year: 1993DVD Features: Interactive Menus Production Notes Scene Access Theatrical Trailer:Three theatrical trailers
Filmed before (and quite nicely) in 1949, Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's story was remade for this admirable 1993 release, executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Splendidly adapted by Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson, the film opens in India during the early 1900s, when young Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) is orphaned and sent to England to live in Misselthwaite Manor, the gloomy estate of her brooding and melancholy uncle, Lord Craven (John Lynch). Because the uncle is almost always away on travels, struggling to forget the death of his beloved wife, Mary is left mostly alone to explore the estate. Eventually she befriends the young brother of a staff maid and Lord Craven's apparently crippled son, who has been needlessly bedridden for years. Together the three children restore a neglected garden on the estate grounds, and in doing so they set the stage for a moving reaffirmation of life and love. Filmed with graceful style and careful attention to the intelligence and cleverness of young children, The Secret Garden is that rarest breed of family film that transcends its own generic category, encouraging a sense of wonder and optimism to become a rewarding experience for viewers of any age. --Jeff Shannon
