DVD Reviews of The Rose

DVD Review: THE ROSE
Summary: 5 Stars

SERVICE WAS FAST . DVD WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION . THIS DVD IS MUCH BETTER THAN THE VHS TAPE WHICH I ALSO HAD .

DVD Review: Bette's Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Rose" belongs to Bette Midler, no doubt about it, although I found the performances by all the actors to be quite believable and spot on. Throwing all of herself into this role, Bette Midler must have been exhausted at the end of shooting. It was exhausting just watching her character unravel. I have an insight and I may be wrong, as I am no psychiatrist, but I feel strongly that Mary Rose suffered from borderline personality disorder; she showed all the symptoms: fear of abandonment, alcohol/drug abuse & addiction, impulsive rage, impulsive sexual liasions, self-loathing, striking out at the one who loved her most, to name a few. Even though she was a fictional character, albeit loosely based on Janis Joplin, she felt real to me. Her reckless self-destruction was painful to see and I must admit I wept for her. This is the film to see if you appreciate strong, gutsy performances by excellent actors.
Like another reviewer here, I also enjoyed seeing a very young David Keith in the role of her bodyguard, as he has always been a favorite actor since I first saw him in "Officer and a Gentleman".

DVD Review: Not described correctly
Summary: 1 Stars

Not described as "full" or "wide" screen on line. 2 copies I purchased were "wide" screen and I returned them very unhappy as I really wanted the movie and 1 for a gift.

DVD Review: The Rose
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Rose" is a fabulous movie, especially if you remember the 60's and Janis Joplin. Bette Midler did her best acting in this film, portraying an unhappy rock star who just wants to be loved. I've loved this film since it first came out..... I own it on VHS, now I own it on DVD, and if some other media comes out in the future, I'll probably buy it on that, too! It's a classic that I never tire of watching.

DVD Review: Midler dazzles.
Summary: 3 Stars

The Rose starring Bette Midler in her feature film debut is a good film but not brilliant. Midler is the best thing in this film, The Rose is loosely-based on the life on Janis Joplin. Midler gives an intense and courageous performance. That beautiful song, The Rose still gives me chills, amazing! The ending is so sudden and sad, if you are a die-hard Bette fan then give this musical/drama a run through, enjoy!

Description of The Rose

In an Oscar-nominated performance, Bette Midler portays a rock star whose success is laced with so much booze, drugs and hard-living, it eventually causes her downfall. Trapped in a self-created hell Rose begs her manager (Alan Bates) for time off from her concert tour. When he refuses, she seeks compfort and love in the arms of a handsome driffter (Frederic Forrest), but even he cannot handle her life of excess. Electrifying musical numbers, including the hit song "The Rose" make the film a pop culture classic.
Bette Midler plays a Janis Joplin-like singer overwhelmed by stardom and its excesses. Mark Rydell (On Golden Pond) directs what is a kind of hybrid showcase for Midler's concert talents and a standard pop biopic, with the usual rhythms of desire, success, betrayal, failure, and such. Alan Bates is the best thing about the movie as the Rose's ruthless manager, and Harry Dean Stanton and Frederic Forrest add some interesting seasoning. But as a whole, the film can't rise above its mixed purposes or clich?s. --Tom Keogh
