Rembrandt and His World: Rembrandt's home for many years of his life was in Amsterdam where he and his wife kept a huge number of paintings to satisfy his mania for collection, and to provide inspiration for his own work. This program presents the restoration of his house and contains insights into Rembrandt's personality.

Rembrandt: Painter of Man is a fascinating documentary showing Rembrandt?s unique capacity to capture and depict the many aspects of humanity. Dozens of his most famous paintings, as well as his self-portraits, are featured.

There are 40 years between the first and the last self-portraits of Rembrandt van Rijn. The first shows the coming young artist: proud and self-assured. The last one shows the old painter, marked by his misfortune and worries. In his paintings man was central, and these and his self-portraits are a mirror of his life, which is shown in a series of dissolves from one self-portrait to the other. A Film By Bert Haanstra.

: The Restoration of "The Night Watch" is an in-depth look at the restoration work performed on Rembrandt?s masterpiece "The Night Watch," which was seriously vandalized in 1975. The eight-month job of restoration began: a new canvas was fixed in place, old varnish was removed, previous damage was repaired, and the entire painting was cleaned. Rembrandt and His World: The renowned 17th century Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn was not only a major artist, but he was also an avid collector of prints, paintings and objects d?art. Many of the items in his collection became inspirations for his work and often can be recognized in his drawings and paintings. Today, the collection may be viewed at Rembrandt?s house, now completely renovated and restored to its original condition and where many of his world-famous works of art were originally produced.
Rembrandt and his wife Saskia bought the house in 1634, two years after their marriage. At the time, the young artist?s works were selling well and they lived quite comfortably. The Rembrandt?s stayed in this grand residence for nearly twenty years surrounded by not only his own works, but also by works of numerous other artists.
This unique program brings to life the world in which Rembrandt lived and worked as well as showing less well-known aspects of the old master and his personality. It was his mania for collecting that ultimately led to the artist?s financial downfall. Although his income had declined with fewer commissions coming to him, the artist continued to add to his collection and this finally led the family into bankruptcy. Fortunately, a complete inventory of the collection was drawn up at the time, and this list was an immensely valuable source of information during the restoration of the home.In addition to the many fine paintings and other works of art in his home, Rembrandt kept albums containing some 8,000 prints and drawings ? many of which were by famous artists. Not only did the artist derive inspiration from many of the works in the collection, but also from the house itself.
