DVD Review: Worth watching at least once....

After years of postponing watching this movie, I finally took the plunge after a friend of mine insisted that I see it. He didn't love it, but he said it's better than its reputation of being one of the worst films ever made.
It is a good film.
The Postman was maligned like hell when it was released, mostly for its length (just under 3 hours), and general hokiness. Some called it an ego trip for Costner (who stars in it, co-produced it, and directed it). Honestly, it's what one would call a "noble failure". I haven't read the book it is based on (which is supposed to be great), but I liked a lot in the film. The first 30 minutes are the best with Costner's character (he's never actually named in the movie) roaming the wasteland as a performer with his donkey, going to settlements along the way performing for food. He gets captured by General Bethlehem's army (the general is played by Will Patton in the film's most outlandish, over the top performance), and is forced to serve. He escapes, and finds an abandoned postal truck. He puts on the postman's clothes and says he's been given a directive by the new US government to deliver the mail again. He's lying, but people believe him, and he ends up starting something that he never dreamed of.
The good stuff is the film has great cinematography and a fascinating premise. Unfortunately, the acting is over the top and too melodramatic, the music score is WAY over the top (it ends up being unintentionally funny), and there are some really cutesy passages of dialogue that make one grimace (and they feel like Costner improvised them). But there are still powerful, surprising moments in the film, and the film isn't boring, despite a 3 hour running time. The length isn't the problem; in fact, if it was longer, it might have been even better. It feels like Costner tried to get too much in, and the film ends up being rushed, hokey, and corny, especially at the end. The film could have been a lot better, but it's not the worst film ever made.
It's not a lost masterpiece, but it's worth watching at least once.
