DVD Reviews of The Postman

DVD Review: It is entartaining...
Summary: 2 Stars

This movie isn't that bad at the beginning. I am a big fan of the post-apocalyptic genre. I liked the beginning of the movie because it kind of resembled the way in which the road warrior was portrayed. The protagonist was a lone wanderer in the desert, and he did not depend on anybody to survive in the wasteland. The movie changes completely when the protagonists becomes the postman. It seems that the movie changes from the nuclear wasteland theme to a western theme. The movie becomes very cheese when the postman arrives at the town. At times, the movie becomes a kind of western soap opera. In conclusion, the description of the movie is very misleading. This movie is a very cheesy western. I liked some parts of the movie though, especially the beginning, and that is why i am giving it an extra star. I guess that if you like westerns you can like this movie more than i did. However, this movie is a very mediocre "western". What i can assure you is that you will laugh at how ridicule the plot is.

DVD Review: Love It Or Hate It (I Guess...)
Summary: 4 Stars

Many of the 4 and 5 star reviews mirror most of my feelings for this film so this'll be a short review. Just a couple of thoughts to underscore my overall positive rating.

I'll agree that the film might have been too long but if you were to ask me what I would cut the only answer I can give revolves around Bill the mule escaping his fate at the hands of an army cook. Would this shorten the film? Er, no. So I don't know, hell, shorter sex scene? Well, there's three minutes. I guess if a talented editor really sharpened his scissors you could trim fifteen minutes. I just couldn't make it any shorter than that without destroying it.

I read a few of the one star reviews and they either mentioned the film butchered the book (like that's never happened) or it was too long. One reviewer went on to say that it could easily have been a success at two hours. Really?

Otherwise, I liked the movie and feel it is original, well written, patriotic, well acted and executed with sincerity and not in the tongue-in-cheek manner of "Waterworld". (I was not a fan of WW and consider it a horrible film though I loved his boat and the color of the water.)

I do think this film suffered at the hands of critics for the fact that it does share common elements of WW (Post Apocalypse/Loner/Evil Band) and "Dances With Wolves" (Wilderness/Loner/Evil Band). Of course Costner is going to be held up to very sharp light after "Dances".

Another observation, where are you going to find a movie made with that kind of scenery? In those locations? The locations where this story was set became a character in itself. No ruined cities, suburbs or ghost towns here. This is the first post Apocalypse story set in the far west with wonderful vistas and rough topography, not to mention the weather.

Hey, do you suppose the Postman realized he was going the wrong way after he snatched the kid's letter? Man, I would have filmed that scene without the turnaround, oh yeah. Just a shot of him seeing the kid down the road with the letter. Bam! Got the shot, got the letter and still headed in the right direction!

DVD Review: One of the Most Underrated Films of All Time
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the most underrated movies of all time. The Postman is not just your average post-apocalyptic scenario. It is a deeply emotional and philosophical film about the power of hope. What I love about this movie is that it shows how something very simple-- mail-- can become a symbol for everything that makes us human and for everything that makes us American. Yes, its a little long, and yes, the ending requires a slight suspension of disbelief. But the movie is good enough that you wont notice the length, and moving enough that disbelief hardly even enters the mind. I love this film, and recommend it highly.

DVD Review: I THINK that I want this DVD, but.....
Summary: 4 Stars

I THINK that I want this DVD, but I'm still sour with Universal about the "Jet Li's Fearless: director's cut DVD (in case you don't know, IT WAS NOT ON EITHER DISC, just the first two original versions, and they seem to not be willing to reemberse the money of the people who actualy bought it, so...I'm cautious..

DVD Review: The Postman
Summary: 4 Stars

I LOVE this movie! I am still of the generation that loves real MAIL. As much as I love modern technology and use it, there is still NOTHING as awesome as opening my mailbox and seeing a letter from a close friend or loved one! When the "mayor" yells out--as he's being shot--with the letter he'd received from his sister via the Postman, "Ride, Postman! Do you hear me? Ride!"--I cry like a baby with goosebumps all over my body! It's true. We have become so dependent upon emails and text messaging that we have gotten away from the truest, best form of communication: a simple letter. Amazing movie. I wish more people would realize the amazing value of this great movie!

Description of The Postman

The year is 2013. War has crippled the earth. The united states is no more. Hope is forgotten until a drifter whose fabricated tale of a restored united states of america gives survivors the will to fight for the freedom they lost. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 02/08/2005 Starring: Kevin Costner Will Patton Run time: 178 minutes Rating: R Director: Kevin Costner
Falling from the Oscar-winning glory of Dances with Wolves to the opposite end of the critical and box-office scale, Kevin Costner must have been deeply humbled when this three-hour postapocalyptic tale--his sophomore effort as a director--was greeted with a critical thrashing and tepid audience response. One of the most conspicuous flops of its decade, the 1997 release must have seemed like a sure thing on paper: a kind of futurist Western starring Costner as a charismatic drifter-turned-hero who leads the resistance against a military tyrant (Will Patton) by reviving the long-dormant postal system to reunite isolated communities in their fight for freedom. The movie bombed, but, like many audacious failures, it's got qualities that make it at least partially endearing, and its earnestness (although bordering on corny) keeps it from being entirely silly. Faint praise, perhaps, but Costner's ode to patriotism is occasionally stirring and visually impressive. The dual-layered, widescreen DVD includes a documentary segment about the creation of the film's special effects sequences, featuring a running commentary by the special effects creators. --Jeff Shannon
