DVD Review: Fantastic Concert, Dated and Distraction Video Production
Summary: 4 Stars

If you are a fan of the Police, even a somewhat casual one, this is a must-have. The audio quality is excellent (in fact, it's too good, and some tracks like "Wrapped Around Your Finger" don't sound live at all; although the synchronization is impeccable, it becomes clear that some of the tracks must have been re-recorded, or syncronized to concert video from earlier studio recordings).

The footage edited together is also great, and we see a lot of wonderful little details like Sting bouncing on a trampoline, a tree in a pot onstage, and Stewart Copeland applying tape to his abused fingers. (What was up with their backup singers wearing High School cheerleader outfits, anyway?) It really gives a sense of what an incredibly hard-working and charismatic trio they were -- musicians at the top of their energy level.

The video production is a little primitive and dated. I don't really mind the use of the paintbox-type effects and tinting or switching to monochrome. However, one track in particular sounds fantastic but is painful to watch: "Spirits in the Material World" uses a strobe effect for the entire song (seizure alert!) But even gaffes like that can't ruin it; it has very high replay value.

i haven't seen the dvd yet -
but i rented the video many times in the mid 80's.
i remember the video as being good - very good -
and recent viewing of a few numbers on youtube
convinces me that my memories are accurate.
will just have to order the dvd now.
the audience shots and fancy editing
add a sense of electricity immediacy and excitement.
and the shots of Stewart Copeland on the drums
highlight the enormous energy of these performances.
i usually overwhelmingly prefer studio versions
to recordings of live performances
but this video stands that rule on its head.

DVD Review: Synchronicity Tour
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a high energy version of the 1983-4 Tour of The Police, their last until the Reunion Tour of 2007-8. I love watching this video. It is well produced technically, although a few clips from the Montreal concert made it in the concert from Atlanta. Some of the clips of the audience are actually from the Montreal concert - but it doesn't really matter. The audience focused on represented the passion of the people and the music. The audiences embracing the songs, and the strong interesting music and lyrics. The Police (mostly Sting's) writing has many different flavors, tempos, bass lines. The prowess of Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland are there also. For me this video captures my experience at a recent Police concert I attended - and I love recreating this feeling and experience. Sting is wild in this Tour, colorful, and dynamic.

If you like Police or rock in general, having this dvd is a must. It appears the best songs in a powerful performance. It's good to see Sting, Copeland, and Summers togheter playing with charming!!
Besides, this dvd has songs like synchronicity II, Roxanne, Don't stand so close to me and others, that in the vhs version did not appear.
