DVD Review: Sellers is Silly and Funny -

This is the fourth of the Pink Panther films, which was made in 1976. I found that was totally enjoyable to watch. Peter Sellers plays the Iconic "Inspector Clouseau", who is perfect blend of Charlie Chaplin and James Bond.
The films plot shows that the long-suffering boss, Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom), is driven insane by Clouseau's (Peter Seller) inept and irrational ways that magically leave him successful and looking like a hero.
Clouseau takes over the duties of Chief of Police, as Dreyfus escapes from his insane asylum caretakers. As Deputy Chief of Police, Clouseau escapes from a group of 26 hapless assassins, and also dons costumes and hilarious accents to show off his improvisational abilities. He displays his Karate moves with his valet, Cato (Bert Kwouk).
Dreyfus is intent on finishing off Clouseau, so he captures a scientist known as Dr. Hugo Fassbinder (Richard Vernon) who is inventor of the death ray (or a ray that makes everything invisible). With the death ray as leverage, Dreyfus threatens to destroy everything unless Clouseau is turned over to him. World leaders hear of this and have a meeting where they decide to send a beautiful Russian Spy (Lesley-Anne Down to lure him to his doom. Of course, she falls in love with him and wants to give up spying to be with Clouseau.
The plot gets crazier, if that is possible. Dreyfus has a bad tooth and somehow Clouseau disguised as a dentist gets into Dreyfus' castle and saves the day.
As usual, the story is about Clouseau and how he manages to avert evil, accidents and death and save the world. Many laughs if you can handle silly situations.

After the commercial comeback of "The Return of the Pink Panther," Peter Sellers and director Blake Edwards maintain their creative momentum with this immediate sequel. Happily, "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" (1976) surpasses its predecessor in comic invention and production value. This time around, Sellers' immortal Inspector Clouseau must stop the insane Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) from destroying the world - not an easy task when the ex-boss calls for international assassins to eliminate the bumbling French detective. Edwards and Sellers make the most of this outlandish premise with several hilarious set pieces, highlighted by Clouseau's eventual penetration into Dreyfus' Bavarian castle. Peter Sellers returns as the slightly dim-witted, Inspector Jack Clouseau, in this sporadically funny follow-up. Steve Martin, like in a Hindu Proverb, has to be born a thousand incarnations, before he can come within a thousand miles of Peter Sellers. This time, Clouseau, is fighting his former chief, Dreyfus(Herbert Lom), who controls a piece of machinery, with which he is threatening to blow us all sky high. Blake Edwards is at the helm again, and, Lesley Ann Down, provides the beauty.

Although A Shot in the Dark is often cited as the best of the Pink Panther comedies starring Peter Sellers, the fifth film in the series--The Pink Panther Strikes Back--is a close runner-up. Combining a James Bond-ish plot with Sellers's trademark lunacy as Inspector Clouseau, the film finds Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) driven insane by Clouseau's incompetence, threatening global destruction unless Clouseau is eliminated once and for all. Of course, the bumbling Clouseau leads a kind of charmed life, emerging relatively unscathed (and completely oblivious) from a phalanx of 26 unlucky assassins! Along the way, Sellers dons a variety of costumes and hilarious accents, and his improvisational style is given free reign. Karate showdowns with his valet, Cato (Bert Kwouk), once again keep Clouseau on his toes, and lovely Lesley-Anne Down plays a would-be assassin who finds Clouseau amorously irresistible. Highlights include the memorable "Does your dog bite?" scene between Clouseau and a goofy innkeeper, and a dental extraction scene in which Sellers and Lom reached the peak of their on-screen comedic antagonism. For good ol' fashioned slapstick comedy, they don't get much funnier than this. --Jeff Shannon
