DVD Review: Hit-and-miss collection.

"The Pink Panther" was a favorite of mine growing up, right up there with "Looney Tunes" and "Tom & Jerry," but if you pop in a DVD of any of these shows and play all the episodes, you'll typically wind up with a mix of great cartoons for all ages along with the "Hey, it's the 60s. Let's fall back on comedic gunplay. Have someone get shot in the face a lot"-type of thing.
This collection ("Pranks in the Pink") has quite a few Pink Panther episodes on it (something like 25 or more). The ones without any talking are typically the best ("Dial 'P' for Pink," "Pink Punch," "The Pink Tail Fly," and "The Pink Phink," to name a few), but there are a few too many with a lot of talking and gunplay ("Vitamin Pink," "Pink Ice," "Pinkfinger," "Sink Pink") and also boozing ("Pickled Pink").
So, if you want to expose your children to "The Pink Panther," be cautioned that some of the cartoons may not be appropriate for them. If, however, you don't have children, then you're merely in for a bunch of Pink Panther shows that range from poor to mediocre to good to excellent.
DVD Review: The Start Of A Famous Cartoon

This is a collection of "Pink Panther" cartoons from 1964 to 1967. The PP debuted in late `64 and one more was released on Christmas. The next year, 13 more came out with 10 more in 1966. By then, this cartoon had become very well-known in movie theaters, which is where we saw them. (VHS was years away.)
Most of these, including the initial one "The Pink Phink," are very funny although in 1965 a few had dialogue or - gasp - a laugh track, which is never needed. Fortunately, only a handful had that, and some of those with the dialogue were actually very good.
At almost three hours, you get plenty of laughs from this disc (with even better material to come in the "Adventures In Pink" DVD and is historic for having that first animated gem ("Phink"), which won an Academy Award.
