DVD Reviews of The Persuaders!, Set 1

DVD Review: ITC's stylish Anglo-American comedy/adventure...
Summary: 3 Stars

From Britain's ITC Entertainment, the lovely people who in the 1960's brought you Danger Man, The Saint, The Avengers, The Baron, and The Prisoner, comes The Persuaders! (1971-72), a series about a pair of affluent jet setters, who get entangled in various affairs that usually involve mystery, intrigue, and of course beautiful women. The Persuaders are Lord Brett Sinclair (The Saint himself, Roger Moore) an English nobleman, and American Danny Wilde (Tony Curtis) who made his fortune in oil. This unlikely pair is brought together in Monte Carlo by Judge Fulton (Laurence Naismith) in "Overture", the series opener, where the former magistrate uses the two men to help him bring a fugitive to justice. From this odd collaboration, a remarkable partnership is born.

The intent to provide co-stars with equal billing, is reflected in the series' opening credits, which features a split screen presentation simultaneously displaying the background of each man. The Persuaders! has a light and carefree tone that usually balances against the seriousness of the presiding adventure. Moore and Curtis (in his first TV series) both embrace the frivolity, as the playfulness is at times outrageously blatant. They carry on with flair and gusto, like a couple of mischievous schoolmates out for kicks. Their deep affinity for each other is remarkably sudden, but the trust between them is absolute. Reports vary regarding how well Curtis and Moore got along on a personal level, but onscreen things appear smooth as silk, with both actors well in tune with The Persuaders! easy breezy tone and fluffy plots.

Although stressing equality, with the settings in Europe and England, Sinclair has the distinct advantage of being familiar with people, places, customs, and cultures, that Wilde has no knowledge of. Even so, Daniel manages to take things in stride, and contribute in his own unique way to the proceedings. The accoutrements of the two men is notable, as Lord Sinclair, a former racecar driver, is often behind the wheel of a yellow Aston Martin DBS. Not to be out done, Wilde pilots a red Dino 246. In addition, the debonair Moore used the program to showcase his commercial clothing line, appearing in a parade of fancy attire. Curtis would also at times, favor an extravagant wardrobe, and the show's production costs were reportedly among the highest for a TV program at the time.

With writers who worked on The Saint (Terry Nation) and The Avengers (Brian Clemmens), The Persuaders! is sort of like The Saint with an American partner. Many of the episodes are not unlike something Simon Templar might be involved in, and the writers do a pretty good job of keeping Wilde and Sinclair, busy in various nefarious and often ridiculous escapades. In "Chain Of Events" Danny spends almost the entire episode on the run from baddies, with an attaché case containing top secrets, chained to his wrist. The often used brainwashed and programmed to kill gambit, is featured in "Someone Like Me", where Sinclair is to be used as in instrument for murder. In "Greensleeves", Sinclair uncovers a plot where a gang plans to impersonate him, and steps in to impersonate himself, with Daniel joining the fun, going undercover as a butler. Larry Storch guests as a childhood friend of Danny's, suspected of being a criminal in "Angie...Angie". The guys discover a clue to a lost formula in the wreckage of a downed plane, and then encounter a parade of beauties in "The Long Goodbye".

A highlight are the female guest stars, who are usually young, beautiful, and blonde, with ladies such as Susan George (Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry), Annette Andre (Randall & Hopkirk Deceased), Melissa Stribling (Dracula), Juliet Harmer, Kirsten Lindholm (The Vampire Lovers), Joanne Dainton, Anna Gael, Suzanna Leigh (Paradise Hawaiian Style), Suzan Farmer, Rosemary Nichols, Valerie Leon (Blood From The Mummy's Tomb), Anna Palk, Imogen Hassall, Nicola Pagett, and Madeline Smith (Live And Let Die), among those appearing.

The series ran for just one fun-filled season, producing 24 episodes that are broken up into two DVD sets. Set One has 13 episodes on four DVD's, and Set Two the remaining 11 on three discs. Sir Roger Moore, producer Robert S. Baker (who also worked with Moore on The Saint) and Johnny Goodman (executive in charge of production), get together to provide a commentary track with lots of warm memories, and interesting tales from days gone by, for two of the episodes. Already a star, Moore, would soon rise to a new level as the next 007, in Live And Let Die (1973). Tony Curtis's next stint on television would be on Vega$ in 1978. With many familiar faces and the established ITC look and style, The Persuaders! may appeal to fans of ITC's various adventure and suspense adventures, although the light comedic tone could take a while to get used to.
